Usually it takes a sizeable payment and a fair amount of manipulation to convince someone to act violently, and even then a tremendous amount of guilt typically follows regardless of the circumstances. This factor of personal guilt always came into play in executions, so over the years, they devised different ways of killing people that allowed for the executioner to become more and more detached from the physical violence. On a greater scale, we see this same kind of mentality today in the development of drone warfare...

Das Vordringen des Niedriglohnbereichs in die gesellschaftliche Mitte halte ich für den schlimmsten Armutstrend. 6,5 Millionen Menschen, 22 Prozent der Beschäftigten, arbeiten dort für weniger als zwei Drittel des Durchschnittsverdienstes. Das führt nicht immer zu großer Armut, aber bei den geringsten Schicksalsschlägen, Krankheit, Unfall, größeren Ausgaben ? drohen existenzielle Probleme. (?) Ich vertrete die These, dass Armut gewollt ist, weil sie als Disziplinierungsinstrument und Drohkulisse dient. Armut zeigt denjenigen, die noch nicht arm sind: Wenn du den Verhaltensmaßregeln unserer Hochleistungs- und Konkurrenzgesellschaft zuwiderhandelst, landest du im Extremfall unter den Rheinbrücken. (?) Armut führt aber nicht zwangsläufig zur Rebellion der Betroffenen. Denn die haben ganz andere Sorgen. Sie müssen sich beispielsweise darum kümmern, am 20. des Monats noch ein warmes Essen auf den Tisch zu bringen. Eher könnte die Mittelschicht erkennen, dass sie zwischen Arm und Reich zerrieben zu werden droht, wenn die Städte auseinanderfallen. Die Angst vor sozialem Abstieg führt oft zur stärkeren Abgrenzung nach unten, etwa gegenüber Zuwanderern. Man denke nur an die Sarrazin-Debatte. Besser würden die Angehörigen der Mittelschicht für eine Umverteilung des Reichtums eintreten. Denn für alle Gesellschaftsmitglieder ist genug da.''

''Um ökonomische Ungleichgewichte innerhalb der EU abzubauen, baut die EU-Kommission in diesem Jahr ihren Stabilitätspakt aus und erweitert dabei die Zahl der Indikatoren von zwei auf zehn. Künftig spielen beispielsweise auch Außenhandelsüberschüsse eine Rolle bei der Bewertung, ob ein Land die ökonomische Stabilität der EU gefährdet. Was sich in der Theorie ursprünglich sehr gut anhörte, ist jedoch dank der massiven Einflussnahme Deutschlands in der Praxis zu einer einzigen Farce geworden, wie der gestern veröffentlichte ''Alarmbericht'' zeigt.
