Bringing Democracy Back Home

Since the Cold War the United States has fought three major wars. Congress authorized each of these wars. The president has also initiated several limited wars. Poverty, conscientiousness, and broken families

EconLog

11/01/11

Right-wingers should spend a lot more time reading left-wing ethnography of the poor. It may seem strange, but when leftist social scientists actually talk to and observe the poor, they confirm the stereotypes of the harshest Victorian. Poverty isn t about money; it s a state of mind. That state of mind is low conscientiousness...

NATO in Libya: Is Syria next?

Now that NATO is closing up shop in Libya, will it turn to Syria? Right now, the answer is no. But if the fragmented Syrian opposition -- bolstered by Turkey, a member of NATO, which is turning increasingly against Syrian President Assad - manages to set up a Benghazi-like enclave either inside Syria or across the border in Turkey, anything goes. To be sure, there are lots of differences between Libya and Syria. ... That hasn t stopped hawks from suggesting that it s time to intervene in Syria, too...

The 'Tea Party' Movement, More Hype Than Reality

Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III, Truthout: 'Politics is the art of compromise for the betterment of all; but by being so inflexible and wedded to winning the ideological battle, in the end the American people lose. As Republicans struggle through their 'anybody but Romney' selection process, the Tea Party with the assistance of mainstream media continue to hype weak and inexperienced prospects such as Bachmann, Perry and Cain while Republican leadership continues to succumb to their madness.'

Republicans Crack Me Up

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'Upon cracking open the Washington Post home page early Tuesday morning, I counted no less than eleven stories about GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain s not good very bad day on Monday. That bad day started with a Politico article detailing two separate incidents of accused sexual harassment leveled at Cain in the 1990s. Before anyone had a chance to decide whether or not the charges had merit, Mr. Cain and his people took the report and transmogrified it into the one thing the Washington press corps loves above all else: a juicy cover-up story.'

Occupy Wall Street: Lagerkoller in Lower Manhattan

Plutocratic Government Tries To Beat Down #Occupy

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: 'In a country with a true democratic culture the local governments would be serving these people and honoring their right to dissent and protest. They would instinctively be showing up at protests like this and offering to help with any sanitation problems, etc, setting up public toilets, and other services. They would even be offering tents. If there are security problems in the occupy camps a city would be posting police in the encampment to help the people there, with a clear mission to serve them. They certainly would not be seeing them as the enemy, and attacking them.'

Unequal Justice: Banker Arrests, 0; Protester Arrests, 2,511

Bruce Judson, New Deal 2.0: 'The message to people and entities, large and small, is that they cannot rely on a blind justice system to protect them from unscrupulous transactions. The idea of fair dealing - which is at the heart of our economy - is breaking down. This implicit message also erodes the underpinnings of a vibrant capitalist economy. The rich and powerful can violate the law and will receive a slap on the wrist. As a result, the rights of the less powerful entities, which were violated by these elites, will not be protected by our justice system. The concept of fair dealing collapses.'

Syria is just an axis for American evil to spin

The US, judging from what has happened in Iraq and the kind of forces that are being encouraged in Libya, seems to be working on a carefully calculated plan to Balkanise the Middle East by splitting the countries into ethnic and religious mini-states.

Middle East Propaganda 101

By Glenn Greenwald

When it comes to American propaganda about the Middle East, this New York Times article - detailing U.S. plans to bolster its influence in the region after it 'withdraws' from Iraq - is a masterpiece.

Somalia, Libya, Uganda: US Military Increases Focus on 'Militant Threats' From Africa

By Associated Press

While putting few U.S. troops at risk, the United States is playing a growing role in Africa s military battles, using special forces advisers, drones and tens of millions of dollars in military aid to combat a growing and multifaceted security threat.

Ugandans wonder: Is US after Kony, or oil?

Obama s announcement could not have come at a worse time in Uganda's political history. The country has been rocked by corruption scandals in the oil sector, with parliament calling for the country s ministers to resign while it investigated charges that they took bribes from a British oil company.

Top Ten Ways to Tell Kony is Phony

By Bruce A. Dixon

Kony 2012 is not a search for justice. Kony 2012 is a corporate-style PR and psy-ops campaign, a cynical hoax engineered to justify US and Western military intervention to control the incredibly lucrative oil, mineral, water and strategic resources of the heart of Africa.

Just Three Corporate Front Groups Spent 13 Times as Much as the Entire Labor Movement to Buy Judicial Elections

Ian Millhiser, ThinkProgress: "After the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate money in American elections, the decision s defenders claimed this wasn t such a big deal because unions could also take advantage of the decision. A new report by three leading voting rights and judicial independence groups gives the lie to this claim. According to the report, just three corporate interest groups spent more than 13 times as much trying to influence state supreme court elections as the entire labor movement.'

Why a Mortgage Cramdown Bill Is Still the Best Bet to Save the Economy

Alex Ulam, The Nation: 'Many Americans believe that the financial crisis stems from the Bush administration s running up the federal debt and out-of-control spending by the American consumer. But much of the blame for the country s current economic woes lies with the Obama administration s failure to forcefully tackle the biggest threat to the American economy today: the housing crisis.'

Department of Justice Balks at Turning Over Guantanamo Detainee 'Power-of-Attorney' Document to His Lawyers

Jason Leopold, Truthout: 'Attorneys for Abu Zubaydah say they have been trying to mount a meaningful defense for the 'high-value' detainee, who has been in the custody of the US government since March 2002, and have also sought legal remedies outside of the United States to hold accountable those who were complicit in his rendition and torture. But the attorneys claim their efforts have been stymied by the Justice Department (DOJ), which refuses to turn over to them critical documents they need to press forward with Zubaydah s case.'

Then They Fight You

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'At first glance, it looked like something out of Pink Floyd s film 'The Wall': menacing images of creatures in gas masks swarming toward the camera under a dark and forbidding sky. This was no dystopian fantasy, however; these were members of the Oakland police department charging into a group of protesters behind a wall of tear gas, flash-bang bombs, rubber bullets and bean-bag projectiles. The police bull-rushed these unarmed protesters with the intention to do violence, and violence is exactly what they did.'

David Bacon, Truthout: 'Three thousand grassroots people and political activists resume the rally and occupation in Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of City Hall, the evening after police tore down the tents of occupiers and fired tear gas and rubber bullets to try to disperse the demonstrators. Occupiers discussed in small groups the actions they intend to take to keep their movement growing.'

Gandhi s Wings: Occupy Wall Street and the Redistribution of Anxiety

Robert Johnson, AlterNet: 'Occupy Wall Street is about anxiety, and the courage of young people to fly into conflict on Gandhi s wings. This is the noble legacy of civil disobedience on display at Zuccotti Park. We are seeing that anxiety channeled by courage can transform a society ... You can see this drama played out as the demonstrators meditate surrounded by police whose anxiety is palpable, perhaps because the police cannot figure out which side they should really be on.'

Occupy Movement Underutilizes Potential to Challenge War Economy

Kathy Kelly, Truthout: 'Many who are led to protest in the US may understandably want tax reform, better jobs, higher salaries and more lucrative 'occupations' for people. But they also have an opportunity to press even more urgently their important questions about how our society can begin seeking work that is truly useful, and how that is tied to the production of goods and services that won t serve military causes and won t be used for war, destruction and bloodshed.'
