Gaddafi s execution: A wake-up call for Americans?

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

10/21/11

No doubt that many supporters of the U.S. government s war on terrorism and its global assassination program will come to the defense of the Libyans who executed former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi after taking him captive. They will say, 'What s wrong with executing Gaddafi? He was a terrorist, wasn t he? Those people didn t need a stinking trial. Everyone knows that Gaddafi was guilty'...

Depth Needed in News Coverage of Wall Street

Jesse Laird, Truthout: 'What is less certain, however, is whether American media will take upon themselves the more useful tasks of analyzing these underlying moral failures and of providing a fair hearing to the people most damaged by the economy. So far, media coverage tends to focus on dramatic encounters and confrontation without going deeper into the underlying causes or dynamics. America needs greater depth of insight by media into the present crisis.'

How to Make Banks Really Mad: Occupy Foreclosures

Mike Konczal, New Deal 2.0: "Could the next step after camping in Zuccotti Park be camping out in homes facing foreclosure? As people think a bit more critically about what it means to 'occupy' contested spaces that blur the public and the private and the boundaries between the 99% and the 1%, and as they also think through what Occupy Wall Street might do next, I would humbly suggest they check out the activism model of Project: No One Leaves.'

The War on Terror in Australia

CounterPunch
by Jeff Sparrow

10/24/11

Footage from the recent police raid on the Occupy Melbourne camp in the city square has been circulating globally: ugly Youtube clips of protesters dragged by the hair, cracked over the head, menaced by dogs and so on. Why did the conservative lord mayor, Robert Doyle, send in his constabulary to disperse a relatively small and entirely peaceful assembly that could quite easily have been accommodated for the foreseeable future?

Goodbye Iraq? Not Exactly

David Swanson, War Is A Crime.org: 'There will be U.S. troops remaining in Iraq. They simply will not be employed by the 'Department of Defense' (as we call it, I m not sure Iraqis call it that). Thousands of mercenaries will be employed by the State Department. Iraqi police will be trained to U.S. specifications on the U.S. taxpayers' dime. We will maintain the world s largest embassy. And I have to assume the CIA is not departing.'

UN Panel Calls for Inquiry Into Qaddafi s Death

Nick Cumming-Bruce, The New York Times News Service: 'The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Friday for an inquiry into the death of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi amid conflicting accounts of how the Libyan dictator met his end and video that appeared to show him alive after his capture.... In the laws of war there is an obvious difference between someone killed in combat or crossfire, or a captive being executed or summarily shot down.'

http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/35/35730/1.html

--------

Mindestlohn: Schlecht geschnitten

November ein Bad Hair Day.

Wall Street created worst recession since WWII

The Raw Story

The American nightmare that is civil asset forfeiture

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Wendy McElroy

10/18/11

Being innocent does not matter. Not being arrested or convicted of a crime is no protection. With amazing ease, the government can take everything you own. And to recover it, you must prove your innocence through an expensive and difficult court proceeding in which a severely lowered standard of evidence favors the government. This is civil asset forfeiture...

Is the National Security Complex Too Big to Fail?

TARPing War

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch: 'American taxpayers are shelling out at least $1.2 trillion a year for the vast military, intelligence, and homeland security combine that operates in their name ... When a country spends 'more on defense than the next 17 top-spending countries combined' and can t win a war, you should know that something s wrong, and that 'too big' and 'fail' do stand in some relation to each other ... You, the taxpayer, bailed out a host of tottering financial firms ... The only bright spot: those were one-time, two-time, or three-time deals. The [military industrial] Complex is forever (at least as its managers see it).'

Obama drones kill citizens: Where's the law?

If 'we continue to justify such practices in only the vaguest of terms, we should expect other countries to take them up, and almost certainly in ways we will not find to our liking.' Killer drones are being built and perfected in many countries in the world, and not only by our friends.

Moammar Gadhafi, RIP

You could almost hear the sigh of relief coming from Western capitals as news of Gadhafi s unceremonious death spread around the world. Apparently captured alive ... he was almost immediately killed by his captors, who then dragged his body through the streets of Sirte, which had been the last loyalist holdout. That a US drone first attacked Gadhafi s convoy, and so gave the rebels the opportunity to make short work of him, is a telling detail...

Ten Years After the Afghan Invasion: Welcome to the Failed State of Americastan

Johnny Barber, Truthout: 'As we step off the Turkish Air flight and walk across the dusty tarmac to the terminal, we are greeted by a large billboard. In big, bold English it proclaims, 'Welcome to the Home of the Brave.' It stops me in my tracks. I shake my head, thinking, 'damn weird' and continue in to passport control. After waiting in a short line, I present my American passport to the guard in the booth. He doesnt' acknowledge me. He flips through the shiny, new pages until he gets to the visa. He stamps it. He turns to the picture. He gives me a precursory glance and hands the passport back to me. I turn and enter Afghanistan.'

Letter to a Dead Man About the Occupation of Hope

Rebecca Solnit, TomDispatch: 'Dear young man who died on the fourth day of this turbulent 2011, dear Mohammed Bouazizi, I want to write you about an astonishing year - with three months yet to run. I want to tell you about the power of despair and the margins of hope and the bonds of civil society. I wish you could see the way that your small life and large death became a catalyst for the fall of so many dictators in what is known as the Arab Spring. We are now in some sort of an American Fall. Civil society here has suddenly hit the ground running, and we are all headed toward a future no one imagined when you, a young Tunisian vegetable seller capable of giving so much, who instead had so much taken from you, burned yourself to death to protest your impoverished and humiliated state.'

Walking Like an Egyptian: Food, Farming and Foreign Policy

Robert Naiman, Truthout: 'If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then '#occupy' protesters around the world this weekend just gave the Arab Spring an Academy Award. Of course, the chain of inspiration of freedom and justice seekers is unending in history, but theres' no question that the Arab Spring opened a new chapter which is inspiring people to protest for justice worldwide.'

Wall Streets' Moneymen Shower Cash on Candidates

David Goldstein, McClatchy: 'Even as protests over its political influence grow louder, Wall Street is one of the leading sources of money so far in the 2012 race for the White House. Not surprisingly, the biggest beneficiary has been Republican hopeful Mitt Romney, according to a new analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan campaign-finance watchdog group.'

Rediscovering Civil Disobedience

George Goehl, The Nation: 'There comes a time when silence becomes betrayal,' proclaimed Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he took a risk and spoke out forcefully against the War in Vietnam. As more Americans debate whether to leave the sidelines and join the Occupy Wall Street movement, we should heed Dr. Kings' words. Our individual silence is a form of acquiescence, and we speak volumes not only through our action but also through our lack of it. Silence signals that we are okay with whats' happening, or that we have simply given up. While Occupy Wall Street has inspired a new level of consciousness in America, we have only just scratched the surface of what will be needed to shift the political economy of our country.'

Sounds of Outrage Heard on Wall Street

Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: 'Harvards' Nieman Watchdog Web site recently featured a very good piece by John Hanrahan, a former reporter at The Washington Post, about press coverage of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. 'There has been an outpouring of well-informed criticism of the mainstream news medias' initial coverage and non-coverage of the Wall Street protests,' Mr. Hanrahan wrote. Coverage was initially dismissive and minimal - and mea culpa, I wasnt' paying attention myself. But it's becoming clear that theres' something important happening: finally, after three years in which the Very Serious People refused to hold the financial industry accountable, theres' a real grass-roots uprising against the Masters of the Universe.'

Unequal Influence: There Are Politicians Who Work on Behalf of Corporations and Those Who Work on Behalf of Humans

Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: 'Increasingly, citizens of democratic nations are setting aside labels like Republican, Democrat, Tory, and Labour when considering their politicians. Instead the labels in peoples' minds are: working in the interests of corporations and working in the interests of individual citizens.'

US, Euro arms used against Arab protesters

Loveland Reporter-Herald

10/18/11

The United States, Russia and many European countries that have supported the swell of protests across the Middle East and North Africa this year also supplied some of the weapons used against demonstrators, Amnesty International said in a new report Tuesday. The report comes as the human rights group urges the U.S. Congress to block a $53 million proposed U.S. arms sale to Bahrain, where more than 30 people have been killed as the ruling Sunni Muslim monarchy has waged sweeping crackdowns against mostly Shiite Muslim protesters who have demanded greater rights...

The paradox of the outraged

Ludwig von Mises Institute

10/17/11

A wave of social upheaval is shaking the world. In the West, the press has called the protesters 'the outraged.' The name is taken from the pamphlet Time for Outrage! (Indignez-vous!) by French intellectual Stéphane Hessel. The outrage by the political and economic situation in the Western world is justified.'
