Schulden-Supermacht USA

United States fails to stand for peaceful change

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

07/20/11

By its support for violent outcomes, U.S. policy encourages more bloody revolts around the world, and the accompanying loss of life and property, without necessarily increasing the chances for democracy. Instead, the United States should quit interfering in the internal turmoil of other nations - especially avoiding the provision of weapons and military expertise to movements that violently oppose governments unfriendly to the U.S. - and should instead steadfastly declare rhetorical support for peaceful transitions to democracy and respect for individual rights...

Norway: Right-wing, not Muslim, terrorism!

The Nation Blog
by Robert Dreyfuss

07/25/11

By now, the American far right is cringing over revelations that the Norwegian bomber and camp-shooter was a white, ethnic Norwegian with far-right sympathies and fantasies of a global anti-Muslim, ethnic cleansing 'Knights Templar' movement, and a fundamentalist-style Christian to boot. ... [A]long with mainstream commentators and the panoply of self-styled 'terrorism experts' trotted out on CNN, Fox and elsewhere in the wake of the Oslo attack, it was convenient to blame Al Qaeda and Co. Norway and 9/11: Fighting the last war

A common criticism of militaries is that they are always preparing to fight the last war instead of the next. The recent attack in Norway suggests that the same problem exists for the 'war' on terrorism. The point is made clearer if we compare that attack to its closest equivalent: 9/11...

Fundamentalism Kills

Chris Hedges, Truthdig: 'The gravest threat we face from terrorism, as the killings in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik underscore, comes not from the Islamic world but the radical Christian right and the secular fundamentalists who propagate the bigoted, hateful caricatures of observant Muslims and those defined as our internal enemies. The caricature and fear are spread as diligently by the Christian right as they are by atheists such as Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens. Our religious and secular fundamentalists all peddle the same racist filth and intolerance that infected Breivik.'

Norway Attacks Expose US Media s Double Standard on 'Terrorism'

Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: 'Numerous news outlets and commentators initially blamed the attacks in Norway on Islamic militants. Rupert Murdoch s British newspaper, The Sun, ran a front-page headline that read, 'Al-Qaeda Massacre: Norway's 9/11.' In the United States, Murdoch's Wall Street Journal also initially blamed 'jihadists,' reporting that 'Norway is targeted for being true to Western norms.' Meanwhile, on the Washington Post's website, Jennifer Rubin wrote, 'This is a sobering reminder for those who think it s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists.' To discuss the media coverage of the attacks, we are joined by Glenn Greenwald, constitutional law attorney and political and legal blogger who has written about the media coverage of the attacks in Norway for Salon.com.'

Emails Show White House Promotes Genetically Engineered Crops in Wildlife Refuges

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: 'The Obama administration is supporting genetically engineered (GE) agriculture in more than 50 national wildlife refuges across the country and watchdog groups say internal emails among top administration officials reveal that the GE plots are a priority in the White House. Earlier this year, a settlement in a lawsuit filed by the watchdog group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) and its allies halted the planting of GE crops in US Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife refuges in northeastern states. Now PEER claims the Obama administration is working with the biotech lobby to shield GE plots in refuges from future legal challenges.'

EHS AND THE BOOK THAT HAS MOST INSPIRED ME

By fortuitous timing, last Friday, June 24, I arrived in Belfast Central Library to be stopped in my tracks by this friendly, soul-hugging compliment and invitation from a senior librarian: 'Imelda, you are a person who can inspire other people. What book has most inspired you?'

And what was all this about? Well, the same day s BELFAST TELEGRAPH (Life Section, page 31) explains it clearly:

'Libraries Northern Ireland are inviting the public to nominate their most inspiring or uplifting read this weekend as part of a nationwide London 2012 Open Weekend in which hundreds of thousands of people will celebrate the start of the one-year countdown to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

You can go to your library, fill in the form, and see if your choice makes the cut. . . .'

Within minutes I had come up with my most inspirational book ever. Again, I was fortunate that the library's reserve section held a copy (though a later 1975 edtion), so I could quote directly from it those visceral, psyche-imprinting words which I first came face to face with when a thirteen year old patient.

As the excerpted passage form this book, in its own prescient way, touches directly on life experiences that lay in my yet-to-unfold future and includes EHS, I would like you to share it with our readers

THE BOOK THAT HAS MOST INSPIRED ME IS:

Russell Braddon s CHESHIRE V.C. Published 1954

WHY?

Early summer 1958, at the end of my first year in boarding school, I was gifted this book while recovering from surgery in Sligo General Hospital .

I found, in particular, the description of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Leonard Cheshire s damascene conversion while observing it, unforgettable.

In recent years, I have returned frequently to rereading the passage I quote below. I realize now, looking back from the vantage point of sixty six years that I was fated to spend my life engaged with issues almost identical with those of Cheshire. These are:

War and Peace; Disabilities arising from adverse bio-effects of radiative exposures.

Quoted Passage:

'These are the things the people of Nagasaki saw on that day when Cheshire looked down from 39,000 feet and saw the writhings of an atomic explosion over what remained of their city.

And though none of these things could then have been known to him, as he watched the writhing cloud, obscene in its greedy clawing at the earth, swelling as if with its regurgitations of all the life that it had consumed, Cheshire suddenly sensed it all. In one monstrous ten-millionth of a second his mind revolted against everything that this cloud implied. The same flash and blast that killed 40,000 Japanese curdled all desire in him to kill again. There must, he realized, be better things to do with one s life. There must be some power higher in the universe than that of nuclear physics. There must be something that he personally could do.

In that split second of nuclear fission came the greatest moment of truth in his life. Now and inevitably, Cheshire, the supremely efficient man of war, the much decorated hero of one hundred mortal raids against the enemy, became Cheshire, crusader for peace.'

(Chapter 12, 'Flash-Burn')

Juli 2011 http://www.nachdenkseiten.de/?p=10194#more-10194

Das Rettungspaket des EU-Gipfels aus griechischer Sicht

'Eine abschließende Bewertung der Brüsseler Beschlüsse vom 21. Juli ist beim derzeitigen Informationsstand kaum möglich. Kalter Putsch. Euro-Gipfel mit Systemwechsel

The manufacture and manipulation of fear

Wrights 2012 Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

07/23/11

For example, everyone is screaming that we must raise the debt ceiling or catastrophe will strike our beloved nation. Unfortunately, catastrophe is already upon us with the enormous burden of debt all Americans must endure as their livelihoods are taxed away. The only thing that can make it any worse is going deeper into debt. It is foolish to believe that America can solve her debt problem by plunging even deeper into debt. But mark my words, the fear of what might happen if we don t will win the day, and once again the debt ceiling will be raised...

Deconstructing the debt ceiling debate

Las Vegas Review-Journal
by Vin Suprynowicz

07/28/11

The federal government has set a new debt 'ceiling' 11 times in the past decade. ... Eleven times they have hit the ceiling, and 11 times they have simply raised it again. Why? What unforeseen emergency came up? A nuclear war with China? California fell into the ocean? The glaciers have reached Cleveland and are still pushing south?

Apocalypse nigh?

CounterPunch
by Alex Cockburn

07/24/11

The fight over the deficit is one of those American ceremonies, as embalmed in ritual speech and gesture as an English coronation. ... In this latest ritual enactment the Republicans are faring badly, losing in the opinion polls because many of them are insane and increasingly perceived as such by the American electorate, magnificently tolerant in such matters. There s nothing like hearing that you might not get your Social Security check next Wednesday to concentrate the mind...

The debt limit mess

Future of Freedom Foundation

The U.S. government has run up a debt of more than $14 trillion, nearly the size of the economy s annual output - and it?s not enough! So the politicians want to borrow $2.4 trillion more. But the need congressional authorization. That s what Washington is in a tangle about these days...

There is life after default

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Peter G. Klein

07/22/11

In following the debates over raising the US debt ceiling, I am struck by the frequent claim that defaulting on public debt is unthinkable because of the 'signal' that would send. If you can t rely on the T-bill, what can you rely on? Debt instruments backed by the 'full faith and credit' of the United States are supposed to be risk-free - almost magically so - somehow transcending the vagaries of ordinary debt markets. The Treasury bill, in other words, has become a myth and symbol, just like the Constitution...

http://mises.org/daily/5476/There-Is-Life-after-Default

The truth about the debt ceiling

The Libertarian Standard
by Geoffrey Allan Plauche

07/27/11

Failing to raise the debt ceiling will not necessarily result in default. The federal government has plenty of revenue to cover interest payments, even if it must shift that money out of other parts of the budget. Any claims of immediate default and imminent financial collapse are disingenuous fearmongering designed to fool a gullible and economically ignorant public and force an increase of the debt ceiling and an increase in taxes...

The cybersecurity-industrial complex

Reason
by Jerry Brito and Tate Watkins

A rough Beltway consensus has emerged that the United States is facing a grave and immediate threat that can only be addressed by more public spending and tighter controls on private network security practices. But there is little clear, publicly verified evidence that cyber attacks are a serious threat. What we are witnessing may be a different sort of danger: the rise of a cybersecurity-industrial complex, much like the military-industrial complex of the Cold War, that not only produces expensive weapons to combat the alleged menace but whips up demand for its services by wildly exaggerating our vulnerability...
