War as the Politics of Failure

Cary Fraser, Truthout: 'The recent decision by the Obama administration to spearhead the NATO effort to oust Muammar Qaddafi from power in Libya reflects the oft-evident American penchant for war as a substitute for intelligent diplomacy. It was this mindset during the George W. Bush administration which led the US into pursuing two expensive and indecisive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.'

America in the Hands of a Professional Military

Jeff Shear, Miller-McCune: 'Americans observe two anniversaries this year, neither one of them wanted. March marked eight years of combat in Iraq, and October, 10 years of fighting in Afghanistan. These are America's 'long wars,' a seemingly endless grind of combat. These long wars invite comparison, and some recall the eight years of US war in Vietnam, but there is a more compelling distinction. It was a conscript Army that flew its Hueys over the jungles of the Mekong Delta; it is an all-volunteer force that drives its Humvees along the Tigris and in the shattered urban landscape of Kabul.'

China urges U.S. to protect creditors after S&P warning

US credit rating at risk

A downgrade would erode status as the world s most powerful economy and the dollar s role as dominant global currency.

China urges U.S. to protect creditors after S&P warning:

China s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the United Statesmust take 'responsible' measures to protect investors in its debt after Standard & Poor's threatened to lower its credit rating on the United States due to a bulging budget deficit.

Scott Walker Admits Union-Busting Provision 'Doesnt Save Any' Money for the State of Wisconsin

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'Today, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) and Peter Shumlin (D-VT) to testify in a hearing titled 'State and Municipal Debt: Tough Choices Ahead.' Much of the hearing was spent probing Wisconsin s spate of anti-union restrictions it recently passed. At one point, Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) confronted Walker about his crackdown on public employee unions. The congressman referenced a provision Walker signed into law that would require union members to vote every year to continue their membership. Kucinich asked the governor how much money the state would save from the provision. Walker repeatedly dodged the question and eventually admitted that it actually wouldn t save anything at all.'

Top 'US' Corporations Outsourced More Than 2.4 Million American Jobs Over the Last Decade

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'A Washington Post/ABC News poll released this morning finds that 44 percent, a plurality, of Americans think the economy is getting worse, rather than staying the same or getting better. With unemployment hovering around 9.6 percent while economic inequality is at levels not seen since the Depression, many Americans feel as if the economy is leaving them behind. The Wall Street Journal reports today that Corporate America certainly isn't doing its part to help bring America out of its economic malaise. The paper surveyed employment data by some of the nation s largest corporations - General Electric, Caterpillar, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Chevron, Cisco, Intel, Stanley Works, Merck, United Technologies, and Oracle - and found that they cut their workforces by 2.9 million people over the last decade while hiring 2.4 million people overseas.'

BP Oil Spill: It Could Happen Again

--------

BP s Secret Deepwater Blowout

Greg Palast, Truthout/Buzzflash: 'Only 17 months before BP s Deepwater Horizon rig suffered a deadly blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, another BP deepwater oil platform also blew out. You have heard and seen much about the Gulf disaster that killed 11 BP workers. If you have not heard about the earlier blowout, it s because BP has kept the full story under wraps. Nor did BP inform Congress or US safety regulators, and BP, along with its oil industry partners, have preferred to keep it that way.'

http://www.truthout.org/node/1239

BP Is Messing With the Wrong Woman

David Swanson, War is a Crime: 'A year ago BP began filling the Gulf of Mexico with oil. Last week BP blocked a woman from entering its annual meeting. Which will prove the bigger mistake? BP may have chosen the right country to hit with the worst oil disaster in world history. If there s any population that will take seeing its land and water destroyed for corporate profit lying down, it s got to be us. We are split between gratitude and indifference: should we thank BP or just stay out of its way?

http://www.truthout.org/bp-messing-wrong-woman/1303196400

A Year After Gulf Disaster, BP Still Being Awarded Lucrative Government Contracts

Jason Leopold, Truthout: 'BP continues to receive tens of millions of dollars in government contracts, despite the fact that the British oil company is under federal criminal investigation over the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and twice violated its probation late last year. Last week, the Defense Logistics Agency awarded Air BP, a division of BP Products North America, a $42 million contract to supply fuel to Dover Air Force Base for the next month and a half.'

Deforming the Reform: A Case Study in Oversight Perseverance

Dina Rasor, Truthout: 'I am continuing our series of solutions for the Department of Defense (DoD) with a look at how the government keeps track of companies that have engaged in misconduct when awarded lucrative government contracts. This is specifically a problem for the DoD, because when you look at the top 100 contractors, the majority with high numbers of misconduct are companies that work with the DoD. This is not surprising because procurement oversight in the DoD is weak, and many of the companies know that if they get caught doing something wrong, they can declare a national security need and will probably get a follow-on contract or other contracts in the future.'

To hear the 'humanitarian' interventionists tell it, the NATO alliance is currently bombing Libya in order to avert an alleged 'massacre' that may - or may not - happen if Moammar Gadhafi gets his hands on the rebels now holding the eastern province known as Cyrenaica. It s just a coincidence that Libya is a major oil producer, and that the NATO allies demanding the dictator s ouster are thirsty for the stuff. If you believe otherwise, well then you have fallen victim to a 'conspiracy theory,' as any number of unrepentant neocons will tell you...

US military s footprint too big

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

04/19/11

The speed with which U.S. military forces were able to begin combat operations in Libya last month, following the president s order to intervene in the unfolding civil war, is a tribute to the professionalism and combat readiness of the U.S. armed forces. But it also should give us great pause. Unless the United States has been attacked, military intervention should be a very difficult, sobering decision requiring painstaking reflection. The trouble is: with U.S. forces now deployed all over the globe, military intervention has become too easy. If it wasn't so easy perhaps we would do less of it...

NATO weapons uranium poisons civilian population

Depleted uranium has been proven to cause serious damage to troops, civilians and the environment, but the US, France and Britain have blocked a UN ban proposal. In an interview with Press TV, Conn Hallinan, of Foreign Policy and Focus in Berkeley, California, discusses the West s awareness of the immense long-term danger of using depleted uranium in weapons, and its leaching impact, which poisons the environment and water supply for billions of years. Depleted uranium is being used in Libya in NATO weapons. Out of the 800,000 troops that served in the Gulf, about 107,000 of them are down with Gulf War Syndrome. There is no question that depleted uranium played a major role in the development of Gulf War syndrome. The main problem for the civilians is that depleted uranium is extremely heavy -- about the heaviest thing you can imagine, so when it misses a target and doesn't explode, then it goes very deep into the ground -- about 25-30 inches into the ground and when the rain comes that starts leaching into the environment, and possibly, the water supply. The UN sub-committee has called for a ban on depleted uranium in munitions in violation of the Geneva Convention and UN Charter. And that action was blocked by France, Britain and the US.

But for the people and other living creatures who make the region their home, the oil spill s impacts are still being felt acutely today. In an effort to correct the misperception that the BP disaster is over and the 200 million gallons of oil that spill into the Gulf of Mexico have magically disappeared, staff with the Louisiana-based Gulf Restoration Network last week took reporters on a tour of areas that are still heavily impacted by BP s oil.'

Tax Day has arrived. Not coincidentally April 15 also marks the cinematic release of Atlas Shrugged - Part 1. The timing could not have been planned more appropriately, as our federal government hovered on the brink of a shutdown just last week, states are unable to balance their budgets, and a malaise not witnessed since the Carter administration seems to have gripped our nation...

The news that we have been lied into war yet again should hardly come as a shock. After all, our two-party system means that the different parties take turns doing the same thing. Yes, but how could the American public fall for it so soon after the Iraq debacle? Easy: you only have to fool some of the people most of the time, and with the Democrats in office, it s their turn to put one over on a different audience, their 'progressive' base...

Perhaps the most damaging effect of public (i.e., government) schooling is the malleable mindset that it produces in American children, a mindset that defers to the authority of the government in important matters. Day after day, year after year, state officials mold the minds of the children into accepting popular, albeit false, doctrines. While some succeed in breaking free of the indoctrination (libertarians are the premier example), many people carry their molded mindsets for the rest of their lives...

But I believe that the majority (or even a political or moral authority) should not be given that power when it comes to issues of personal liberty (as long as these liberties are not in violation of the harm principle). Allowing the majority to deny rights and freedoms to minority groups is no better than despotism...

"Spillionaires": Profiteering and Mismanagement in the Wake of the BP Oil Spill

Kim Barker, ProPublica: 'The oil spill that was once expected to bring economic ruin to the Gulf Coast appears to have delivered something entirely different: a gusher of money. Some people profiteered from the spill by charging BP outrageous rates for cleanup. Others profited from BP claims money, handed out in arbitrary ways. So many people cashed in that they earned nicknames - 'spillionaires' or 'BP rich.' Meanwhile, others hurt by the spill ended up getting comparatively little.'

Fukushima ist überall

Erneuerbar statt atomar

Hartz IV Urteil: Rechtswidriger Ein-Euro-Job verursacht Tariflohn

Obama s Wrongheaded Stance on Nuclear Power After Japan Disaster

Karl Grossman, Truthout: 'As a candidate for president, Obama knew about the deadly dangers of nuclear power. 'I start off with the premise that nuclear energy is not optimal and so I am not a nuclear energy proponent,' Obama said at a campaign stop in Newton, Iowa, on December 30, 2007. 'My general view is that until we can make certain that nuclear power plants are safe .... I dont think that's the best option. I am much more interested in solar and wind and bio-diesel and strategies [for] alternative fuels.' However, as president, he hired a nuclear power proponent out of the national nuclear laboratory system, Steven Chu, as his energy secretary.'

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis marched in the streets of Iraqi cities - from Mosul to Basrah, from Baghdad to Fallujah - to protest the ongoing military occupation. It passed with a single dissenting vote even though most members of Congress have never actually read it. Budget Battles: Sound, Fury and Fakery

Richard Wolff, Truthout: 'Aiming at the 2012 election, both parties used the deficit and budget debates purely to impress their voters. Basic numbers tell the true story. The current (Fiscal Year 2011) budget spends about $3.5 trillion while receiving $2.0 trillion in tax revenues. The difference of $1.5 trillion (the equivalent of $1,500 billion) is this years deficit. The US Treasury must borrow that from whoever will lend to the US government.. After much hot air, Republicans and Democrats reached a 'historic compromise,' namely a spending cut of $38 billion.'

A Primer on Tax Day Activism

Peter Rothberg, The Nation: 'Because of its symbolic power and resonant history, Tax Day has always occasioned grassroots protests from both the left and right. For decades, the American Friends Service Committee and the War Resisters League have organized volunteers to distribute informational flyers detailing where your tax money really goes and Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn famously organized a tax strike in 1968 to protest US involvement in Vietnam. These days the Tea Party likes to use the day to express what its members argue is excessive federal spending and government run amok.'

In Campaign Mode Now

Ruth Marcus, The Washington Post Writers' Group: 'The official announcement came the week before, but President Obamas deficit speech marked the real launch of his re-election campaign - with the odd spectacle of leaders of the opposition party sitting front and center listening to the candidate. I am not suggesting the speech was a mere exercise in political posturing. The president, in my view, is sincere about wanting to deal with the debt. But he is also realistic about the slim chances of forging a comprehensive agreement before the election, and, you might say, not unmindful of the impending campaign.'

The Corporate Hijacking of Public Education

Crystal Sylvia, Left Turn: 'The premises of corporate education reform are: the main impediments to improving public schools are teachers' unions because they rigidly defend bad teachers; schools need to be run like businesses to make them less bureaucratic and more dynamic; educational experience is not required to be a teacher, principal, or chancellor; the corporate education reform model is the only way public education can be transformed; and success can be measured through data-driven outcomes, with the most important data being student test scores.'

End the Empire

By Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick

Obama has taken a page from the Bill (and Hillary) Clinton playbook and governed as a right-leaning centrist. While trying naively to ingratiate himself with an opposition bent solely on his defeat, he has repeatedly turned his back on those who put him in office.
