Army Deploys Psy-Ops on U.S. Senators

By Michael Hastings

The U.S. Army illegally ordered a team of soldiers specializing in "psychological operations" to manipulate visiting American senators into providing more troops and funding for the war, Rolling Stone has learned - and when an officer tried to stop the operation, he was railroaded by military investigators.

The Push of Conscience and Secretary Clinton

By Ray McGovern

Hillary Clinton - both as a U.S. senator and as Secretary of State - has demonstrated a nonchalant readiness to unleash the vast destructiveness of American military power. The charitable explanation, I suppose, is that she knows nothing of war from direct personal experience.

Why Monsantos GM seeds are undemocratic

The Christian Science Monitor
by Christopher D. Cook

02/23/11

Question: Would you want a small handful of government officials controlling America?s entire food supply, all its seeds and harvests? I suspect most would scream, 'No way!' Yet, while America seems allergic to public servants -? with no profit motive in mind ?- controlling anything these days, a knee-jerk faith in the 'free market' has led to overwhelming centralized control of nearly all our food stuffs, from farm to fork...

Today in Algeria, Yemen, Bahrain and Libya, free individuals, having awoken to the proposition that state power depends on their submission, are disobeying the despotic orders of the political class. Aside from making Western interventionists feel better about themselves, the only use the symbolic measures proposed by Lynch have is to set a pretext for large-scale military invention, which Lynch insists he does not want. Agnostics for pacifism

By itself, I freely admit, extreme uncertainty is a double-edged sword. The consequences of war might be worse than you thought; they might be even better. But as I've argued in my common-sense case for pacifism, pacifists just need to add the weak moral premise that 'before you kill innocent people, you should be reasonably sure that your action will have very good consequences.' This plausible premise, combined with the uncertainty of foreign affairs, creates an almost insurmountable presumption against war...

Normenkontrollklage gegen Hartz-IV-Kompromiss einreichen

Russ Feingolds PAC, Progressives United, Working for Campaign Reform

Nadia Prupis, Truthout: "Former Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold has formed a political action committee (PAC) to fight against corporate influences in political campaigns. Feingold's PAC, Progressives United, launched on February 16 as an 'effort dedicated to mitigating the effects of, and eventually overturning, the Citizens United decision ... [and] to elect leaders at all levels of government who will stand up for progressive ideals.' The Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that corporate funding of political campaigns could not be limited under the First Amendment."

Mexico Cable Shows US Resentment Toward Unions

If one looks at the following cable, one can infer that the US government views workers that try to wield political power and unions which wage battles against governments as players that could threaten a country's economic stability.

Getting the raw end in Wisconsin

C4SS Center for a Stateless Society
by David D'Amato

02/21/11

In the political phraseology of the United States, bogged down in the vacuous false choice of Republican versus Democrat, proponents of the 'free market' are allegedly not supposed to concern themselves with scoundrels like government workers? unions. They are rather to be regarded as the enemy, as conducting an incessant attack on taxpayers in order that they might get something for nothing. But the anti-union turgidity of the Republican variant of the 'free market' obscures what are the actual ? as against the imagined ? effects of the state?s pervasive interventions in the economy...

Why Wisconsin matters to you

Our Future Blog
by Bill Scher

Why are so many who are not part of a union so committed to protecting the role of organized workers in our government and our economy? 1. Weak Economies Need More Demand: Our economy is struggling and our state budgets are distressed because increased unemployment and falling home prices have reduced economic demand. Weakening the ability of any workers to negotiate fair pay and secure retirements will only weaken demand further, hurting the overall economy...

Tausende halten seither das State Capitol besetzt.

The Story of Stuff Project: 'The crisis of corporate influence over American democracy is the latest subject of award-winning Internet filmmaker, Annie Leonard, who, on March 1, released 'The Story of Citizens United v. FEC,' an animated short. Leonard, who directs The Story of Stuff Project, was inspired to make the film by the disastrous 2010 US Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC that permitted corporations to spend freely to influence American elections. The eight-minute film, available March 1 at http://www.storyofcitizensunited.org , places corporate influence - not bad politicians - at the heart of Americans' low confidence in the political process.'

Look for the Union Label

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "Governor Walker of Wisconsin got up on his hind legs on Monday and blasted public-sector unions for being wasteful. He made it very clear that he intends to continue his push to abolish collective bargaining in his state, which basically means he intends to abolish unions in his state. The polls are not with him, the people are not with him, and a number of Republicans in the legislature look to be going soft on the whole deal, but don't tell Walker that. He thinks he's going to get his way on this, so he can be the big conservative hero, the one who abolished unions, thus setting a trend to be followed in more than a dozen other states."

When will George W. Bush be tried for his war crimes?

Future of Freedom Foundation Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

02/21/11

We should take a small measure of satisfaction in former President George W. Bush?s cancellation of his trip to Switzerland after human-rights groups threatened to bring legal action against him for authorizing torture. Persons detained by the U.S. government after 9/11 were subjected to what the Bush administration euphemistically called 'enhanced interrogation,' including waterboarding. In reality those methods constituted torture, violating U.S. law and international agreements...

Sneak Peek At The Last War Crime, The New Feature Film About Indicting Cheney For Torture: The Water Boarding Scene

Please note: Our hosting service provider had an outage Tuesday morning but is back up now, so we are resending this very important alert.

If you have been following our alerts you know we have been hard at work for the last couple months producing a new full length feature film called "The Last War Crime", on indicting Cheney for torture. We are very excited to announce we have completed what they call principal photography, and hope to have the finished film edited soon. In the meantime, we have now posted a clip of the pivotal water boarding scene on this page.

Last War Crime Sneak Peek Video: http://www.peaceteam.net/bumper_stickers_lwc.php

In this key scene we make the dramatic case that 1) water boarding is torture (in part by putting the audience in the point of view of the person being water boarded), and that 2) the purpose of water boarding was to obtain the false confessions to justify an invasion of Iraq, both of which are clear facts.

And from the same page above you can request one of the new bumper stickers we have created to spread the word about this upcoming film debut. We'll send you one for no charge, not even shipping, and all you have to do is ask. But of course if you can make a donation of any amount there are at least two good reasons for doing so.

First, we still have substantial additional expenses to incur in post production to get this new movie in real theaters where it deserves to be. We have provided income for many valiant progressive activists along the way and want to keep doing so. Second, if you can make a donation it makes it possible for us to send free bumper stickers to anyone who cannot make a donation right now.

Ever since Cheney confessed on national television that he was a "big supporter" of water boarding (a scene we also recreate in the film) there could be no doubt that the affirmative decision to engage in torture went to the highest levels of our government, and it strongly suggests that Cheney himself was the driving force in making it happen. The secret legal opinions that purported to justify these war crimes were drafted by David Addington, Cheney's own legal counsel, events we again recreate in the film.

We believe "The Last War Crime" movie is destined to have a real impact, in the first instance by generating a real discussion on the soul of our nation. We have simply spectacular performances from upward of a hundred amazing cast members, a very high level of technical polish in the raw footage, and we are just an edit away from a truly extraordinary cultural event. And if life can imitate art, this powerful narrative film may even result in those who committed these crimes being brought to real justice.

So please request your "The Last War Crime" bumper sticker now from the sneak peek link above, and we'll see you in the theaters!

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Klassenkampf in Wisconsin - The Wisconsin Uprising

Cowboy capitalism and the state

C4SS Center for a Stateless Society
by Kevin Carson

02/17/11

[T]he tendency to generate a surplus for which there are insufficient investment outlets is, in the main, a result of the state capitalist economic model. Government enforcement of artificial scarcity and artificial property rights generates rents, and thereby shifts income from workers and consumers to the owners of such artificial property rights. That means a shift of income from the classes with a higher propensity to consume to classes with a higher propensity to invest, and a resulting chronic tendency toward underconsumption and overaccumulation...

Former aide rips Palin in leaked manuscript

Miami Herald

02/19/11

A leaked manuscript by one of Sarah Palin's closest aides from her time as governor charges that Palin broke state election law in her 2006 gubernatorial campaign and was consumed by petty grievances up until she resigned. The unpublished book by Frank Bailey was leaked to the media and widely circulated on Friday. ... The manuscript was leaked along with an e-mail from an agent touting the book, possibly to a prospective publisher...

Permafrost Melt Soon Irreversible Without Major Fossil Fuel Cuts

http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2011/02/20-5

--------

Thawing Permafrost: The speed of coastal erosion in Eastern Siberia has nearly doubled

The high cliffs of Eastern Siberia, which mainly consist of permafrost, continue to erode at an ever quickening pace. This is the conclusion which scientists of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research have reached after their evaluation of data and aerial photographs of the coastal regions for the last 40 years. According to the researchers, the reasons for this increasing erosion are rising summer temperatures in the Russian permafrost regions as well the retreat of the Arctic sea ice. This coastal protection recedes more and more on an annual basis. As a result, waves undermine the shores. At the same time, the land surface begins to sink. The small island of Muostakh east of the Lena Delta is especially affected by these changes. Experts fear that it might even disappear altogether should the loss of land continue.

Greenspans Incompetence Badgers Wisconsins Workers

Dean Baker, Truthout: "Alan Greenspan has been strangely missing from the fierce battle over the future of public sector unions in Wisconsin and other states. His absence is strange because he bears more responsibility for the current conflict than anyone else alive. The reason is simple. Mr. Greenspan's incredible incompetence in allowing the $8 trillion housing bubble to grow unchecked created the fiscal crisis that is gripping Wisconsin and most other states... How does it change anything if we know that Greenspan (last seen being feted at the Brookings Institution) is the real villain in the Wisconsin budget crisis? First, it should turn the heat where it belongs: Washington."

What?s so remarkable about events in the Middle East is that a significant number of people who had felt powerless looked around at what they?d seen every day of their lives and thought for the first time: 'It doesn?t have to be like this.' When will Americans do that?

Wisconsin: the First Stop in an American Uprising?

Sarah Van Gelder, YES! Magazine: 'The uprising that swept Tunisia, Egypt, and parts of Europe is showing signs of blossoming across the United States. In Wisconsin, public employees and their supporters are drawing the line at Governor Scott Walker's plan to eliminate collective bargaining and unilaterally cut benefits. School teachers, university students, firefighters, and others descended on the capital in the tens of thousands, and even the Superbowl champion Green Bay Packers have weighed in against the bill. Protests against similar anti-union measures are ramping up in Ohio. Meanwhile, another protest movement aimed at protecting the poor and middle class is in the works. Cities around the country are preparing for a February 26 Day of Action, 'targeting corporate tax dodgers.'"

Across the US, GOP Lawmakers Build States of Denial

Michael Winship, Truthout: 'In Missouri, state senator Jane Cunningham (R-Chesterfield) has introduced a bill that would, in the words of progressive website ThinkProgress, 'dramatically claw back' state child labor restrictions, including the prohibition on employment of children under the age of 14 and regulations on the number of hours a child may work during the day. South Dakota was contemplating - but just tabled, thank goodness - a bill that critics feared would expand the definition of justifiable homicide to include the murder of doctors who provide abortions. Idaho is debating a bill to nullify Obama's health care reform, and in Arizona, legislators are sponsoring one that would allow the state to nullify any federal law it doesn't particularly care for. I would ask what's gotten into them, but I think we all know.'

What Conservatives Really Want

George Lakoff, Truthout: "Conservatives really want to change the basis of American life, to make America run according to the conservative moral worldview in all areas of life... What is saddest of all is to see Democrats helping them. Democrats help radical conservatives by accepting the deficit frame and arguing about what to cut... Democrats help conservatives by not shouting out loud over and over that it was conservative values that caused the global economic collapse: lack of regulation and a greed-is-good ethic.... Democrats help 'conservatives when they use conservative words like 'entitlements' instead of 'earnings' and speak of government as providing 'services' instead of 'necessities'... Is there hope? I see it in Wisconsin, where tens of thousands citizens see through the conservative frames and are willing to flood the streets of their capital to stand up for their rights."

Scott Walker Runs on Koch Money

Lisa Graves, PR Watch: 'A new investigation by the Center for Media and Democracy documents the big money funneled by one of the richest men in America and one of the richest corporations in the world to put controversial Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in office. Walker was elected just over three months ago on the heels of an exceptionally expensive gubernatorial race in the Badger State, fueled by groups funded by the Koch brothers, David and Charles. David Koch, the son of a radical founding member of the John Birch Society, which has long been obsessed with claims about socialism and advocated the repeal of civil rights laws, personally donated $1 million to the Republican Governors Association (RGA) in June of last year. The RGA in turn spent $5 million in the race, mostly on TV ads attacking Walker's political opponent, Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett."

Egypt and Tunisia: The first climate revolutions

One of the main causes of hunger is climate change and the weather extremes that precede it, a fact which climatologists have been predicting for years.
