Unjust spoils

The Nation
by Robert Reich

06/30/10

Consider: in 1928 the richest 1 percent of Americans received 23.9 percent of the nation’s total income. After that, the share going to the richest 1 percent steadily declined. New Deal reforms, followed by World War II, the GI Bill and the Great Society expanded the circle of prosperity. By the late 1970s the top 1 percent raked in only 8 to 9 percent of America’s total annual income. But after that, inequality began to widen again, and income reconcentrated at the top. By 2007 the richest 1 percent were back to where they were in 1928 — with 23.5 percent of the total. Each of America’s two biggest economic crashes occurred in the year immediately following these twin peaks — in 1929 and 2008. This is no mere coincidence. When most of the gains from economic growth go to a small sliver of Americans at the top, the rest don’t have enough purchasing power to buy what the economy is capable of producing...

The war for financial independence: Calls to surrender

Our Future Blog
by Richard (RJ) Eskow

07/05/10

There’s a new conventional wisdom forming in Washington, DC this July 4th, one that transcends party lines and the usual classifications of “left” and “right” as they’re understood in that city. It’s only being recognized now, because it deals with a number of different economic issues, but the underlying theme is the same: The American dream of financial independence and security is gone. The sooner you accept that and raise the white flag the easier it will be, so stop struggling. They’re saying the ideal of ‘”life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ is dead. Deal with it. Why, there hasn’t been this much unanimity among Washington elites since — well, since they ‘knew’ there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq...

What Eisenhower Could Teach Obama

Melvin A. Goodman, Consortium News: "Fifty years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower told his senior advisers in the Oval Office of the White House, 'God help this country when someone sits in this chair who doesn't know the military as well as I do.' Several months later, he issued his famous warning about the military-industrial complex."

Melvin A. The rout of Obamanomics

The American Spectator
by Peter Ferrara

07/07/10

In February 2009, I published a commentary in the Wall Street Journal entitled ‘Reaganomics v. Obamanomics,’ which pointed out that President Obama’s economic policies were exactly the opposite of President Reagan’s. I predicted that as a result they would produce exactly the opposite results. Art Laffer has produced a far more sophisticated argument advancing a similar analysis. But the June unemployment report released last Friday shows an economy doing much worse at this point than even I expected...

America is in a Societal Meltdown

In other words, a united constitutional republic can only exist within the framework of certain rather narrow and finite conditions. Remove those conditions and the framework for liberty and limited government falls apart. Frankfurt/Main will sich wieder einmal internationalen Finanzhaien ausliefern. Breiter Widerstand.

?Privatisierung ist out. Die Überführung öffentlicher Dienste und öffentlichen Eigentums in private Hände wird von der Bevölkerungsmehrheit abgelehnt. Die private Stadtpolizei ? rechtswidriges ppp zu Lasten des Steuerzahlers?

The economic normalcy bias

In These Times

After Black Friday s now-annual melee of hyper-aggressive shoppers, the Washington Post reported that Christmas saw credit card purchases jump 7 percent over last year. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve bank reported that consumer borrowing surged to pre-recession levels; Forbes reported that online holiday spending hit a record. ...' In the face of such self-destructive behavior, it s worth asking: Why is overconsumption still the preferred 'normal' in America?

Turkey’s policy toward Iran is worth emulating

Turkey?s policy toward Iran is worth emulating
AntiWar.Com
by Ivan Eland

Invading on the ground would be the only way to make sure that Iran never obtained a nuclear device. After the fiasco of invading Iraq (and the continuing bog in Afghanistan), invading the larger, more mountainous, more populous, and more zealous Iran likely would be an even bigger nightmare. Even though U.S. policymakers seem to be oblivious, or at least ambivalent, to these stark realities, Iran?s neighbor Turkey is not. The Turks are of the opinion that a more cooperative approach from Iran?s neighbors might make Tehran stop short of making a bomb. In other words, Iran might feel secure enough to halt at developing technology that would enable it to construct a weapon on short notice ? much as Japan has already done...

Two Muslim nations in the Middle East have a long history of struggle for democracy. One, of course, is Turkey. Now the world?s most democratic Muslim country, it offers vivid proof that Islam and freedom can thrive side by side. It has for decades been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and closely tied to the United States. Today, even while loosening its traditional enforcement of militant secularism, it is embarking on the most ambitious diplomatic project in its history, seeking to project power by resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and compromise. President Barack Obama chose Turkey to be the first Muslim country he visited while in office, telling the Grand National Assembly, ?Turkey?s greatness lies in your ability to be at the center of things. This is not where East and West divide. This is where they come together...

Turkish Gaullism and Turkey?s ?balancing role?

Thomas Friedman manages to write an entire column on the deterioration of U.S.-Turkish relations and never once mentions the Iraq war, the PKK (which has revived since the start of the Iraq war), the weak U.S. response to the flotilla raid, or the Tehran nuclear deal that he and the administration both dismissed with contempt. If we?re apportioning blame for what has encouraged Turkey on its more independent course, we can assign quite a bit to both the Bush and Obama administrations, but that is not the only thing that interests me here. Friedman passes over U.S. mistakes in silence, because this makes it easier to portray Erdogan as the sole culprit responsible for wrecking U.S.-Turkish relations and it helps the misleading ?the Islamists are coming!? narrative take hold...
