I would like to reply to the statements made by T-mobile with regards to the World Health Organisation statement in the local paper on 27th October, 2006

Please read the enclosed open letter to the newspaper.

Base- station emissions and health concerns

Eileen O’Connor

I would like to thank the Sutton Coldfield News for following the campaign against phone masts and for reporting the latest developments in the campaign which is a very serious global issue.  I would also like to thank the many people from Sutton Coldfield and people as far as Ireland and Canada who have taken time to write letters to the Sutton Coldfield News in support of the campaign.

I am now a member of the EMF Discussion Group (EMF-DG) which is chaired by Sir William Stewart, Chairman for the Health Protection Agency, UK (HPA) the HPA are the scientific advisors to the UK Government.

I was invited to give the EMF-DG a presentation about ‘base-station emissions and health concerns’ on 16th October, 2006 at the Health Protection Agency in London.

I presented evidence of electro-sensitive symptoms and the cancer clusters, including MND in the hamlet of Wishaw and spoke about the enormous impact this has had on my life and the lives of family, friends and neighbours. I talked about how I started the campaign after developing breast cancer in 2001 at the age of 38 which I believe could have been be due to living 100 metres from a 22.5m T-Mobile phone mast for over seven years.

I also presented evidence gathered over the last five years and informed the EMF-DG that I am now networked at the highest level and am linked up with doctors, scientists, politicians, the media and campaigners throughout the UK and the world. I demonstrated that it is a global issue with some countries taking dramatic steps to remove phone masts and many others operating at different guidelines. I also provided INDEPENDENT scientific evidence which provided statistics showing evidence that people and animals are suffering with symptoms at levels below the current ICNIRP guidelines, this backs up the health complaints made by the public worldwide.

You can view the full presentation on the enclosed websites which also includes a “hard hitting” report from American scientist Dr George Carlo, he carried out over $28.5 million dollars worth of research paid for by the phone industry; I also delivered a copy of his report to the EMF-DG.

I am also a trustee for the EM Radiation Research Trust in the UK www.radiationresearch.org , founder of SCRAM www.scram.uk.com and a member of the h.e.s.e. UK steering group www.hese-project.org , take a look at the impressive list of  highly regarded worldwide experts and scientists who have recently accepted the invitation to join h.e.s.e. UK, we hope this group will become a powerful alternative to the current authorities such as WHO and ICNIRP.

H.e.s.e-UK will be able to offer an alternative Independent point of view with scientific support as backup.

Take a look at the enclosed informal photograph taken of the steering group at a meeting earlier this year with Andrew Mitchell MP for Sutton Coldfield, Shadow Overseas Spokesman.

I would also like to add my support to the campaign to stop the mast on the grass verge in Slade Road, outside the Plough and Harrow pub.  I was astonished to read the claims of ‘No evidence of any harm to human health’ from T-Mobile by community affairs manager John Shaughnessy and his accusations of SCRAM using the scientific term “radiation” in “an emotive way”, I shouldn’t need to point out that microwave radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum known as non-ionising radiation, which I’m afraid includes the word he doesn’t like.

Questions for T-mobile, could John Shaughnessy explain why you continue to reassure the public that phone masts are safe when your own parent company

T-Mobil in Germany commissioned ECOLOG to review over 220 pieces of peer reviewed and published papers and they found evidence for:

Effects on central nervous system

Cancer initiating and promoting effects

Impairments of certain brain functions.

Loss of memory and cognitive function

Aren’t you part of the powerful communications industry? Surly you must share this type of important information and research.  However, the report has only just come to light as it was never translated into English.

ECOLOG called for an immediate reduction for the guidelines recommended by ICNIRP, which is a different tune to the one T-Mobile seem to keep singing to the public with claims of safety, I suggest you examine your own research.   I have now presented the ECOLOG report to the UK Health Protection Agency and invited them to review the papers as ECOLOG seemed to reach a different conclusion to the Stewart report which was released in the same year 2000 six years ago!

H.e.s.e. UK has uncovered this report, which was translated free of charge by a professional translator for h.e.s.e. UK. This demonstrates the desperate need to

Release funding to translate further research that is available in Russian and German languages, it’s unbelievable that in the 21st century important research is not

reviewed or taken into account due to language barriers.

John Shaughnessy also pointed out that the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that there was no evidence of any harm to human health from low-powered base stations.  I recently communicated via e-mail with the leader for the EMF project for the World Health Organisation; I decided to send just two questions. Read the answers which I have highlighted in red from Dr T E van Deventer on 9th October, 2006.  Dr van Deventer is in charge of the EMF project for WHO, Radiation and Environmental Health for Public Health and Environment, World Health Organisation, Geneva, Switzerland.

1) Are you guaranteeing phone masts are totally safe?

1)  It is not possible to prove that any physical agent is without risk, and therefore I cannot answer positively to your first question.

2) Will the ICNIRP guidelines protect electrosensitive people?

2) The second question relates to ICNIRP guidelines. You may want to ask this question to the Commission directly.

The enclosed answers from WHO doesn’t offer any level of confidence or reassurance?

I have since directed question number two to the ICNIRP committee and as usual I’ve received no reply. They say silence speaks a1000 words!   I am looking forward to meeting Dr van Deventer towards the end of November at a conference at the EU in Brussels and hope to get some real answers to the questions I have raised.

I ended my letter to WHO and my presentation to the EMF Discussion group with the following statement, as this sums up the seriousness of this campaign.

Read the following paragraph by Dr Robert O. Becker, M.D. he was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize for his research into EMF’s.

“I have no doubt in my mind that at the present time, the greatest polluting element in the earth’s environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields.  I consider that to be far greater on a global scale, than warming, and the increase in chemical elements in the environment.’’

I would like to thank my family, friends, campaigners, doctors, scientists and the media and especially thank my friend Jan Connor who is helping to organise the Wishaw Winters Ball on 18th November in aid of the Radiation Research Trust, we are looking forward to a night of celebration and hope to raise some desperately needed funding. We have received some fantastic prizes from local businesses which include signed football shirts, champagne, electro smog metres, flowers, art, golf and lunch and a tour for 20 people around Westminster by Andrew Mitchell MP.

The Ball is now completely SOLD OUT!

Kind Regards

Eileen O’Connor
