YOU DON'T DESERVE BRAIN CANCER -- YOU DESERVE FACTS
By Amy Worthington

Your cell phone is a microwave transmitter and it should
bear a cancer
warning! Microwave energy oscillates at millions to billions
of cycles
per second. The Journal of Cellular Biochemistry reports that
these
frequencies cause cancer and other diseases by interfering
with cellular
DNA and its repair mechanisms. Microwave promotes rapid cell
aging.
Italian scientists have recently demonstrated that cell phone
radiation
makes cancerous cells grow aggressively. Cordless phones marked
900
megahertz or 2.4 gigahertz emit the same dangerous microwave
radiation
as cell phones.
The connection between microwave exposure and cancer has
been documented
for years. During the Cold War, the Soviets irradiated the
U.S. Embassy
in Moscow, Russia, with low level, twin-beam microwave radiation.
Two
successive ambassadors developed leukemia. Other staffers
also developed
cancer, or their blood showed DNA damage, which precedes cancer.
Research by University of Washington professor Dr. Henry
Lai shows brain
cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the
U.S.
government's "safety" guidelines. Dr. Lai notes
that even tiny doses of
radio frequency can cumulate over time and lead to harmful
effects. He
warns that public exposure to radiation from wireless transmitters
"should be limited to a minimal."
Motorola advises consumers to avoid pointing a cellular antenna
toward
exposed parts of the body. But independent tests show that
cell phones
can also leak huge amounts of radiation from the keypad and
mouthpiece.
This radiation deeply penetrates brain, ear and eye tissues,
which are
especially susceptible to microwave damage. Belt clip cases
allow cell
phones to deliver radiation to the liver or kidney areas when
a wired,
hands-free earpiece is used.
Recent studies confirm that cell and cordless phone microwave
can:
* Cause headaches and induce extreme fatigue
* Cause memory loss and mental confusion
* Precipitate cataracts, retina damage and eye cancer
* Create burning sensation and rash on the skin
* Damage nerves in the scalp
* Induce ringing in the ears, impair sense of smell
* Create joint pain, muscle spasms and tremors
* Cause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levels
* Alter the brain's electrical activity during sleep
* Open the blood-brain barrier to viruses and toxins
* Cause blood cells to leak hemoglobin
* Reduce the number and efficiency of white blood cells
* Stimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cells
* Stress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid,
ovaries, testes
In 1993, the telecom industry committed $25 million dollars
for a series
of research projects designed to prove that cell phones are
safe. The
studies proved just the opposite! They proved that federal
microwave
exposure standards are dangerously inadequate. Cell damage
and tumors
can be easily induced in the lab at about one third of the
FCC's
exposure guidelines.
The telecom boys panicked. They and their lackey politicians
and federal
regulators decided the only lucrative thing to do was to LIE
and DENY.
Despite damning evidence, the FDA still prevaricates: "There
is no
reason to conclude that there are health risks posed by cell
phones to
consumers." Meantime, the telecom industry has been pressing
to INCREASE
BY MORE THAN 10 TIMES the allowable human exposure to cell
phone radiation!
Luckily, Dr. George Carlo headed up the industry's study
project. He
presents the shocking facts in his book, Cell Phones: Invisible
Hazards
in the Wireless Age: An Insider's Alarming Discoveries About
Cancer and
Genetic Damage (Carroll and Graf, 2001). A summary of Dr.
Carlo's book
is this: Cell phones are hot, adequate protective regulations
are
naught, and Americans are being "fried" so that
the deceitful telecom
industry can rake it in! It's dirty business as usual, and
the longer
the industry can con the public, the more billions it collects.
On June 16, 2002, CBS aired a Sixty Minutes segment which
confirmed the
telecom industry is about grungy as it gets. CBS producers
accused major
phone service providers of cheating, scamming, forging signatures,
switching phone service without permission and lying about
charges. The
attorney general of Connecticut stated that despite millions
of dollars
in fines each year, these companies remains incorrigible.
Should we be trusting this industry with our brain tissues
and our very lives?
Microwave to the head is extremely hazardous to children.
Parents in some
European nations are now warned to keep children away from
cell phones.
A University of Utah researcher found the younger the child,
the more
radiation is absorbed by the brain. Spanish researchers have
shown that
cell phones can alter electrical activity of a child's brain
for hours,
causing drastic mood changes and possible behavior and learning
disabilities. Scientists fear that cell phone radiation could
damage
human embryos. Pregnant women are advised to be wary.
A cell phone must greatly increase its field strength to
maintain
communications within the metallic cage of an auto. Thus,
the effect of
microwave radiation inside a vehicle is especially intense.
Volkswagen
of Europe has warned that cell phone usage inside a car can
be
"injurious to health due to the extremely high electromagnetic
fields
generated."
Insurance studies in England showed that an average driver
talking on a
cell is actually more impaired in function and reaction time
than a
drunk. Finland's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority reports
that one
hour of exposure to mobile phone radiation can cause human
cells to
shrink. Researchers believe this is due to increased protein
activity,
an indicator of cell damage. What an unstable world needs
now is a
global population afflicted with incredible shrinking brains!
Brain cancer rates in USA have increased by 25% since 1975.
In 2001,
185,000 Americans were diagnosed with some form of brain cancer.
A grade
four brain tumor can grow from the size of a grape to tennis
ball size
in just 4 months. Brain tumors are almost always fatal and
most people
die within 6-12 months after diagnosis. On April 7, 2002,
Sixty Minutes
aired a fascinating report on brain cancer, explaining that
scientists
are unsure why incidence of the disease is growing so exponentially.
Ironically, the segment was followed by a Sprint ad, which
advised
parents that the best way to keep track of teenagers is to
connect them
to a cell phone.
While researchers say that radical damage to the brain can
occur within
the first few minutes of conversation, telecom ads encourage
customers
to spend many hours on the phone each month. Those blazing,
full-page
cell phone ads in newspapers and magazines must be the reason
cell phone
dangers are almost never discussed in the mainstream media.
An excellent resource tool is Robert Kane's book Cellular
Telephone
Russian Roulette (Vantage Press, 2001). As a telecommunications
expert,
Kane presents an impressive collection of studies showing
that both
government agencies and cell phone manufacturers KNEW YEARS
AGO that
cell phone radiation at present exposure levels is dangerous
to human
health. He notes that cell phones would be rendered useless
if their RF
emissions were reduced to safe levels.
Reports of illness from heavy cell phone usage and from living
or working
close to powerful RF transmitters are synchronous with numerous
cancer-related lawsuits now being filed against the cell phone
industry.
The insurance industry sees big trouble ahead. Underwriters
for Lloyd's
of London refuse to insure phone manufacturers against damage
to users'
health. Cell phones are today what tobacco was 40 years ago.
Americans are being bombarded with communications radiation
in the
microwave spectrum, just like those lucky embassy workers
in Moscow who
ended up so very sick. USA is having a real "blast"
so to speak! And it
is going to get worse as wireless technologies broaden.
It is in everyone's best interest to share the above information
with the
uninformed. Some people appear to have an almost pathological
emotional
attachment to their cell phones and there is a fascinating
suggestion
that cell radiation pulses might actually be addictive to
the human
brain. We can't save those who would rather die than switch.
But ethics
compelled us to ensure that all reasonable people have access
to the
basic scientific facts.

Power
stands charged
By Anjana Ahuja
Are electromagnetic fields causing women to miscarry, triggering
childhood leukaemias, and even driving some people to suicide?
As new
studies emerge, the experts are divided
YOU CAN'T SEE, smell, hear or feel them, but they surround
you at work
and at home. And, according to some scientists, the electromagnetic
fields given off by electrical appliances, house wiring, computers
or
overhead power lines are far from innocuous - they constitute
an
invisible menace eating away at our health and are responsible
for such
diverse ills as childhood leukaemias, brain cancers, miscarriage,
depression and even suicide.
Last year, the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB),
the
government-funded organisation which sets safety limits on
exposure,
concluded that high electromagnetic fields (EMFs) might double
the risk
of childhood leukaemia, and was probably responsible for an
additional
two deaths from the disease each year. Now a massive report
from
researchers in the United States has cast the net of doubt
much wider.
The report, conducted by three senior figures at the California
Department of Health Services, concluded that the authors
"are inclined
to believe that EMFs can cause some degree of increased risk
of
childhood leukaemia, adult brain cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease
(a
degenerative neurological condition similar to motor neurone
disease)
and miscarriage".
The link to miscarriage was especially dramatic - as many
as one in 20
pregnancies may end prematurely due to EMF exposure, the report
said.
Whether by coincidence or serendipity, the NRPB, which is
independent of
the power industry, will shortly issue a discussion document
on whether
action is needed. The miscarriage link is controversial -
both the NRPB
and the Electricity Association, which speaks for power companies,
say
the studies on this were flawed. But Denis Henshaw, a professor
of
physics at Bristol University, who argues that power lines
can make
people sick, says that the new findings on miscarriage turn
this into a
major public health issue.
"We're talking about an absolute extra risk of miscarriage
of 5 to 10
per cent, which is considerable," Henshaw says. "The
power industry has
always argued that even if there was an increased risk of
childhood
leukaemias, they are still very rare, and so it wasn't a public
health
matter. This is a much bigger can of worms." Henshaw
believes that EMFs
are responsible for skin cancers, lung cancers, depression
and around 60
suicides a year.
The authors of the American report, which took ten years
to complete,
cost $7 million (£4.4 million) and runs to 400 pages,
couldn't rule out
links with suicide or adult leukaemia. All three scientists
were "close
to the dividing line between believing and not believing"
that EMFs put
a person at increased risk of these. They did not believe
that EMFs were
implicated in birth defects, other cancers, heart disease,
Alzheimer's
disease or depression. The report did not look at the EMFs
from mobile
phone masts.
Henshaw has hailed the report, the final draft of which was
released on
the internet without announcement last summer, as "groundbreaking".
He
says: "(The report) is unprecedented in its depth. The
power industry
has tried to ignore it, but it's so substantive that people
can't really
complain about it. Importantly, it's also been independent
from industry
pressure. It should wake people up." Henshaw argues that
the NRPB should
follow the examples of Switzerland and Sweden in reducing
the maximum
safe exposure levels. The doubling of childhood leukaemias
was seen at
levels of 0.4 millionths of a Tesla (0.4 microTesla). The
safe limit is
set at 4,000 times that, at 1600 microTesla. Four years ago,
Switzerland
dropped the maximum to just 1 microTesla. To drop the limits
any less
dramatically, Henshaw comments, "would be as irrelevant
as reducing the
speed limit on the motorway from 1,000mph to 500mph".
He also believes
that houses should no longer be built near power lines or
substations,
and that cables should be buried underground.
Dr Michael Clark, scientific spokesman for the NRPB, says
the
Californian report "can't be dismissed but, because it
is a review of
existing work rather than new research, it doesn't substantially
change
anything". He cautions against being too prescriptive
about exposure
levels because the conveniences of modern life might be as
much to blame
as pylons and power lines. "Hairdryers produce large
fields, as do car
engines, but can we really tell people not to drive their
cars?"
While someone standing directly beneath a power line might
experience a
magnetic field of 40 microTesla, a hairdryer or electric razor
can
produce 1000 microTesla. However, Dr John Swanson, scientific
adviser on
EMFs to the Electricity Association, says that these high
exposures come
in short bursts, and holding a hairdryer even a few inches
away from the
head cuts the level to about 100 microTesla.
Clark says that because many factors probably contribute
to miscarriage,
it is vital to be sure that the role played by EMFs is genuine.
The NRPB has appointed Sir Richard Doll, the epidemiologist
who famously
spotted the association between smoking and lung cancer, to
review all
the evidence, including that on miscarriage. Under his guidance,
the
NRPB believes that there is "(no) substantial evidence
of increased risk
of miscarriage attributable to exposure to above-average magnetic
fields" and therefore no regulatory action is called
for.
Doll's scepticism is shared by Swanson, who says: "The
miscarriage
studies are sufficiently flawed for me to be wary. For example,
the
participation rate was only about 39 per cent of the women
approached,
and most epidemiologists would look for a rate of at least
50 per cent.
The questions raised are valid but these studies don't answer
them."
"I think the California report is wrong. Their conclusions
are out of
line with most other reputable research groups around the
world."
What is really needed to resolve the issue is harder statistical
evidence, or a killer fact - a convincing, provable scientific
theory of
how EMFs can physically damage the body. Such a theory would
not only
settle the uncertainty, but would also pave the way for legal
action.
Lawyers such as Martyn Day, whose London firm Leigh &
Day is in touch
with potential litigants, say that the California report is
an important
new weapon in the battle. "It's a significant new piece
of evidence
which has pushed me back to the edge," he says. "But
I could see the
courts being very nervous about this one. There is evidence
that EMFs
affect molecules, but not enough to break them apart. And
it is always
possible that it is something else, rather than the EMF, that's
causing
the damage." And so, in the midst of blurred, ambiguous
statistics, the
controversy lingers. People living in the shadow of power
stations
continue to pile up anecdotal evidence of ill-health, miscarriage
and
suicide. And, in the absence of hard figures, scientists remain
reluctant to believe that the power lines that lattice the
landscape
could damage unborn babies and make people take their own
lives.

Money
shouts
Just lately, the israeli communication office demanded money
from the
cellular companies for the 3G frequencies although they are
no operatig
yet. The cellular companies threatened to give back the 3G
frequencies
if they have to pay for it. Now, the israeli real estate administration
raises the payment per antennas site in such a high amount,
so it is
expected that the cellular companies will remove some antennas.
A
struggle is expected, the companies will resist of course
but the real
estate administation firmly states that the $1000 per site
is history:
The israeli real estate administration raises the tariff of
the land
leasing in hundreds of percents. Instead of $1000 per year,
they will
pay between $6000-$12,000 per site.
Haaretz 9.5.2003
by Ziv Maor
The real estate administration sent a letter to the 4 cellular
companies: Cellcom, Partner, Pelephone and Mirs, and informed
them about
the update of the payment tarifs for erecting antennas on
the
administration lands. It is a sharp raise in 6- 12 times more
than the
existing tariff.
The cellular companies operate hundreds of antennas on these
lands,
and as a result of the raise, the payment per year will rise
from
hundreds of thousands shekels to millions shekels per company.
The new
tariff will be valid from August and it is expected that the
companies
won't agree.
Today the companies pay $1000 per site per year. The administration
claims that it is an historic tariff and not realistic and
that it has
to be updated. The new tariff will be $6000 per year per antenna
on a
taken land or $12,000 per year for erecting antenna on a free
land. In
contrast to other deals on land leasing, the payments for
antennas are
equal - no connection to the land value.
The administration has another fight with the companies,
about a
retroactive payment for antennas that have been erected with
no
permission. It's about 30 antennas which were erected in Bezeq
sites and
the administration learnt on their existance during negotiations
with
Bezeq on the rights of the company in the administration lands.
It seems
that the companies paid to Bezeq for erecting the antennas
but did not
pay to the administration - which as the owner - has to be
given the
leasing payment. In the administration it is claimed that
the companies
make difficulties in everything that is connected to the retroactive
payment. It is about 7 years back, that is $7000 per antenna
and
alltogether $210,000 for the 4 companies together. It is possible
that
some of the antennas will be removed mainly where a new building
is
planned.
