Announcement of a research seminar on Mobile Telecommunications and Health

There are 40 million mobile phones in circulation in the UK population of 55 million people. Across much of the world mobile phones are becoming a normal and increasingly frequent means of communication.

One of the key recommendations of the Stewart Report on Mobile Phones and Health was for a programme of new research supported equally by Government and Industry. This recommendation was accepted with an initial £7.4 million being allocated for the programme. An international committee of experts, chaired by Sir William Stewart, was set in place to allocate and manage the programme.

As part of the Programme, a Research Seminar will be held on the 11th and 12th of November 2002 at the Royal Society in London. The first day will focus on international research into possible health effects from mobile telecommunications and bring together experts from across the world. The second day will be centred around small informal meetings for invited participants. Anyone wishing to attend the first day of the Research Seminar should e-mail mthr@nrpb.org with their contact details and affiliations by the 25th October. As places are limited, priority
will be given to those directly involved in the programme, but a number of places will be allocated to non-specialists on a first come, first served basis.
