Denmark politicians demands 3G health investigation

Denmark's Science Minister Helge Sander is to back a formal investigation on the health effects of 3G UMTS technologies. The investigation comes as several city councils refused the construction of 3G base stations

The National Research Council will conduct the radiation study and look at several areas of concerns expressed by politicians. These include effects on children and young people, long-term effects and general health risks. Others potential side effects apart from cancer will be investigated.

Some politicians insisted that further construction of 3G base station be halted until there is evidence to support that radiation from 3G stations is harmless. Under this circumstance, operators are not expected to pay the penalty for delaying their launch of 3G service.

3 became the first operator in Denmark to launch a commercial 3G service last October. They had 45% network coverage of the population but the launch was hit by problems in drop calls.

Health concerns of 3G base stations were highlighted in a study published by the Dutch research institute TNO in late September. Their study claimed that radio signals can cause headaches and nausea, affecting even non-mobile users. Top companies in the industry dismissed the report and said there are no scientific evidence that suggested radio waves are harmful.

The 6th Congress of European Bioelectromagnetics Association (EBEA)

The 6th Congress of European Bioelectromagnetics Association (EBEA) has just been held in Budapest, Hungary, 2003., from November 13–15. At present time, there is a growing number of scientists conducting studies in the area of bioelectromagnetics. These studies focus on two main aspects of the subject: therapeutic applications and potentially harmful effects of exposures to electromagnetic fields. The EBEA has held 5 congresses since its foundation. The scope of the 6th EBEA Congress is provide a forum for presentation and discussion of latest findings on biological effects of electromagnetic fields including dosimetry, interaction mechanisms, health effects of mobile communication systems and medical applications. The proceedings of the conference will be available soon, and I include a short list of sessions which are relavant to the interests for this research group.

In 1996, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the International EMF Project to address global concerns about EMF exposure. As part of the activities under this project, the WHO in collaboration with the Thai Ministry of Public Health, the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Health Canada, and the Association of Thai Professionals in America and Canada will be holding the Asia-Pacific Electromagnetic Field Conference 26 - 30 Jan 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand. This conference will serve as a forum where scientists from throughout the world will present recent research and discuss its relevance to EMF health and safety. Scientists from the Asia-Pacific region will have an opportunity to discuss research activities and EMF issues in their countries, and provide input to the Project. The objectives of the conference are:

1. To review and update the biological effects from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs),

2. To review the latest developments in EMF exposure dosimetry,

3. To identify and discuss possible health consequences of EMF exposure,

4. To identify issues relating to electromagnetic interference with medical devices,

5. To discuss EMF exposure policy and risk communication,

6. To summarize a framework for the harmonization of international EMF exposure standards, and

7. To present and discuss a model for EMF exposure regulation and compliance.
