"You aren't afraid of the night if somebody watches over you". This is how the children of Gulu, in Uganda, explain what long distance adoption means. People call them "night commuters": for fear of being kidnapped by the rebels and recruited as child soldiers, they spend the night in the markets, the churches, in the halls of local hospitals. Long distance adoptions allow them to sleep in a real house, go to school. in short, they are given them back a child's life.

In these past few years, the children adopted through the Community of Sant'Egidio, in 22 Countries, have become thousands. This experience reveals how, in most cases, long distance adoptions represent a real "life sentence": giving the resources to avoid starvation and live better.

For those who run the risk of becoming child soldiers, and also for many others whose fate is settled, like the children who are born with AIDS in Africa, a family, even on the other side of the world, means to access to the treatment and to the future.

At the same time, long distance adoptions are a sign that opposes the culture of unwelcoming. They are a bond of parenthood established between the North and the South of the world and they make the world a more human place where it is possible to love others. They are a concrete and personal expression of universal fraternity.

A long distance adopted child is a child who rediscovers his or her future. At the same time, though, everyone's future is connected - much more than it seems - to these little ones who become part of our own families in a very special way.
