EDITORIAL

No to the death penalty. We repeat it with grief and a stronger conviction after Dominique Green was executed in the evening of October 26th (USA time), in Texas.

Dominique Green was thirty years old. He had just turned eighteen when he was put on death row, a young black man, poor, with no right to acceptable standards of legal defence.

The Community of Sant'Egidio had stood by his side supporting with all its means his legal struggle for a new trial. With faithful personal friendships, visits and affectionate relationships it had remained close to him. In a letter to a priest of the Community whom he had become friends of he wrote: "It's good to have a family I can call mine".

During these long years, no matter what his personal story may have been, Dominique had become a profound and religious man, known on the death row for his meekness and his smile. Among others, the days before the execution he had also met the son of the victim of the murder he was accused of, who repeatedly asked for his life to be spared.

In his last hours, unexpected hopes had risen that his life could be saved. While everywhere in the world the Communities of Sant'Egidio were all praying for him together with many other men and women, the federal judge asked for a stay on his execution, which was lifted by the Texas General Attorney. A final appeal that his lawyers addressed to the Supreme Court was also denied.

It is not possible to find any reason for this death. On the contrary, the doggedness put in ending the life of this poor black young man reveals evident signs of immense cruelty. It also exposes the tragic self-condemnation of people who believe that men and women simply cannot change, nor become better people, more human and good.
