Today is a day to remember the ultimate power we still hold as voters in the United States of America.

Today is a day for you to make a real difference in the lives of those who are depending on you most: the people of Iraq and U.S. soldiers who are serving far from home.

EPIC is a nonpartisan organization.  We do not endorse candidates.  Our mission is the promotion of peace, democracy and human rights in Iraq.

However, we believe promoting those same values here at home is essential for public accountability, the rule of law, and better U.S. policy on Iraq.  That's why I am taking the time to email you this morning.

Before you head to the polls, here are some things to remember:

(1)  To find your polling place call 1-866-MYVOTE1 or check www.mypollingplace.com. Alternatively, call your country clerk to find your polling place.

(2)  If you run into a problem serious enough to talk to a lawyer, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE.  This hotline was set up by a coalition of nonpartisan groups to deal with the most serious problems on Election Day.

(3)  To check the hours the polls are open, visit www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/vote2004/polltimes.htm.  You should expect long waits at the polls due to a shortage of poll workers, so try to get to the polls early and bring an umbrella and a good book.

(4)  Print the League of Women Voters' card (http://www.lwv.org/elibrary/pub/vote_palmcard.pdf) and put it in your wallet or purse.

(5)  Bring a government-issued picture ID (http://www.bringyourid.org) like a driver's license or passport when you vote. Some states require it but if there are problems, you will certainly need it. If you have a cell phone, take it to call for help if need be.

(6)  As you enter the polls, note if there is an Election Protection person outside the polling place.

(7)  If you are not listed as a registered voter, try to register on the spot. Some states allow that. Otherwise, talk to the Election Protection person if there is one or call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for instructions. If neither of these helps, ask for a provisional ballot. To obtain one, you will need a picture ID.

For other election resources, see the League of Women Voters (http://www.lwv.org) website. Your vote matters to us. Don't let anyone take it away from you.

Very best wishes, Erik Gustafson

P.S.  Now is a good time to reconnect with friends, family, and old acquaintances you have not talked to in a while.  Let them know how much their vote matters to you.  Call them by phone or forward them this email.  The most important election of our lifetime will be determined by voter turnout and concerned Americans like you.
