Please see the call to action below for the Immokalee workers/Taco Bell
Boycott. The struggles of indigenous peoples and the continued
oppression of peoples by the "doctrine of discovery" is pervasive today
in almost every realm of our lives, whether we realize it or not.
Please support the indigenous rights struggle by joining the Immokalee
Workers' efforts, the Western Shoshone Defense Project, the
www.nodirtygold.org campaign pledge or other grassroots indigenous
rights struggles. The time is now. 500 hundred years is long enough.

Western Shoshone speaking event: In Denver, Colorado today (Oct. 8)
Carrie Dann, Western Shoshone grandmother will be marching in the Four
Directions All Nations March at 5:30 p.m. and speaking out against the
actions taken by the U.S. government and corporate entities against the
Western Shoshone people. On Oct. 11, Carrie will be presenting at the
UMC Fountain in Denver from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On most calendars, October 12th is named "Columbus Day," celebrating
the arrival of the first Europeans to the shores of Hispanola in the
Western Hemisphere.

Most indigenous people of the Hemisphere, however, find little to
celebrate when they look back on that fateful day in 1492. And for
that reason, Native Americans from Canada to Chile have declared
October 12th "Indigenous Day," to bring attention not only to the
horrors visited upon indigenous people across the Americas for
centuries, but to the ongoing struggle for indigenous rights today,
500 years later, at the dawn of the 21st Century.

Today, the vast majority of workers who pick tomatoes in the fields of
Florida are indigenous workers -- Mayan, Mixtec, and Aztec men and
women forced from their homes by desperate poverty and political
upheaval to do some of this country's hardest, worst-paying, most
dangerous work, earning in return sub-poverty wages, no right to
overtime pay, no right to organize, and no benefits whatsoever. Some
even find themselves caught in a horrifying and brutal web of
modern-day slavery, forced to work against their will to pay off debts
to their employers.

This October 12th, join us for a National Day of Action in the Taco
Bell Boycott to protest the appalling conditions of Florida's
farmworkers. Picket your local Taco Bell restaurant, hand out flyers
at the Taco Bell on your campus, or help distribute the new CIW
postcards to let Yum Brands know that you won't buy another taco until
Taco Bell cleans up labor abuses in its supply chain. If you are
interested in participating in this national action, email us at
workers@ciw-online.org and we'll be happy to help in any way we can.

John Donne wrote, "Any man's death diminishes me, because I am
involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the
bell tolls, it tolls for thee." This October 12th, celebrate true
solidarity by joining us in the struggle for justice and dignity for
indigenous workers -- for all farmworkers -- in Florida's fields.
This October 12th, Toll the Bell for justice with Immokalee workers,
take part in the National Day of Action of the Taco Bell Boycott --
thanks, Coalition of Immokalee Workers
