ELF-EMF Damage Mice Ovarian Follicles

Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields Damage Mice Ovarian Follicles, Study Shows

Mice ovarian follicles exposed to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) fail to develop properly in many cases, according to Italian scientists involved in researching the effects of ELF-EMF on living organisms.

They found that exposure of mouse pre-antral follicles to ELF-EMF significantly reduced the development of their crucial central cavity (the antrum). The findings were published October 31 in the journal Human Reproduction.

The scientists - from the University of L'Aquilia and University La Sapienza in Rome - would like to see similar research on human ovarian follicles. However, in humans this is currently very difficult technically but studies in animals could be extended.

Research leader Dr Sandra Cecconi, from the University of L'Aquilia, said: "Our results raise concerns that ELF-EMF exposure might impair female reproductive potential by reducing the capacity of follicles to reach the developmental stage that is an essential prerequisite for successful reproduction."

People are exposed to ELF-EMF daily in the home or at work through power lines and the use of appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and kettles, as a magnetic field is generated every time an electrical device functions and an electrical field is also present when an appliance is on standby.

Dr Cecconi said that little had been done to study the potential role for ELF-EMF on the development of mammalian reproduction so their study was designed to see whether ELF-EMF could affect ovarian follicle development in mice.

They exposed isolated mouse ovarian follicles that were at the pre-antral development stage for five days to ELF-EFM at 33Hz or 50Hz frequencies. On day five, only around a third of the follicles exposed to 33Hz and half of those exposed to 50Hz developed antral cavities compared with 80% of controls.

"We don't know yet why this happens but our results indicate ELF-EMF may affect the regulatory mechanism controlling the somatic (non-germ) cells in the follicle."

Dr Cecconi said that more research would be needed to discover exactly how ELF-EMF was impairing the physiological process. It was also important to undertake research to see whether ELF-EMF exposure produced a similar effect on human ovarian follicles.

"At this stage we have no idea whether the same effect would be found, but it would seem prudent to investigate. But human infertility is very complex and many factors can combine to reduce fertility, and in every woman these factors are likely to be different."

Planned School Moved Away From Power Lines

Here is an article on a proposed school being moved further away from power lines. This one back in 1998 in  Charlton Maine, USA.

Planned School Moved Away From Power Lines

By Harold A. Gushue Jr.
Telegram & Gazette Staff
Thursday, April 30, 1998 CHARLTON MA-- The footprint of the planned middle school has been changed on the site to move it farther from power lines. As a result, three petition articles on the annual town meeting warrant attempting to force the school to a new site probably will be tabled.

The nearest corner of the school will now be 525 feet from the power lines and the farthest part of the school will be 750 feet away. The main entrance will be 600 feet away.

Some parents had expressed concern about electromagnetic fields generated by the power lines and possible effects from EMF on the health of the children.

Patricia D. Bair, chairman of the Dudley-Charlton Regional School Committee, told the board last night that she went out Monday with representatives of Massachusetts Electric Co. who measured the field strength at various locations. She said the highest reading at the 525 foot mark was 0.9 milligauss and the reading at the front door location was 0.7. She said readings under the power lines ranged from 97 to 116 milligauss. A milligauss is a measurement of the strength of EMF. In comparison, she said, normal readings in a house range up to 5 milligauss. Of the readings around the planned school, she said "We were pleased with those readings."

Scott Lindgren, who submitted the petition articles to try and force relocation of the school, said he "will ask to have them tabled." Of the relocation on the site, he said, "I think that it's good that they moved the school." He said it was "unfortunate" that parents had to "whack them over the head" to get the school moved.

One article is to rescind the approval to buy the site; another asks voters to approve buying another site not adjacent to Heritage School but also on a sewer line; and the third is to eliminate Old Worcester Road and Morton Station Road to Oxford Road from the phase 2 sewer expansion. The line on those roads would serve the planned school.

Bair said before the meeting that the school board and School Building Committee were both concerned with the safety of children and it should not have been an "adversarial" process.

ROSS: Aren't you concerned when you hear those "possible" health effects...

WHEELER: I have...

ROSS: ...brain tumors, genetic damage?

WHEELER: ...I have to look at what the responsible scientists say...

ROSS: They're alarmed by this.

WHEELER: ...and-and they say that there is not a public health effect...

ROSS: Who are you saying-who says that?

WHEELER: ...and-and they say...

ROSS: Who actually says that?

WHEELER: This is-this is what they-what the FDA has said.

ROSS: (Voiceover) Not exactly. When we checked the Web site of the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, we found a much more qualified position on cell phones. The FDA says, while the available science does not demonstrate harm from cell phones, nor does it lead to the conclusion that they are absolutely safe. (Excerpt)

Army's secret 'people zapper' plans

Antony Barnett, public affairs editor
Sunday November 3, 2002
The Observer

Britain has been involved in secret talks with the United States over the development of so-called non-lethal weapons, including lasers that blind the enemy and microwave systems that cook the skin of human targets.

The Observer has established that British and US military leaders met at the Ministry of Defence HQ in London to discuss the operational benefits of such technology when used as a 'persuasive tool' against people from enemy regimes.

Documents obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act detail talks about battlefield uses of the weapons and whether they could be used to back up economic sanctions against target countries. The weapons include lasers that can blind and stun an enemy and cut through metal to disable vehicles.

Another weapon discussed was a system that uses microwave beams to heat the water in human skin in the same way as a microwave oven cooks a meal. The third category of weapons was the use of gases similar to those deployed to end the terrorist siege in a Moscow theatre, which killed more than 100 hostages.

The disclosures prompted demands last night from opposition politicians for a full statement on Britain's involvement in developing such weapons. Opposition MPs and campaigners believe the fact that the military is considering developing and using these weapons in war or as a tool to threaten other states breaches a number of international arms and humanitarian treaties.

Menzies Campbell, foreign affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, called on the Government to 'come clean' on Britain's involvement and will demand Foreign Secretary Jack Straw gives details.

'These reports have serious implications,' Campbell said. 'If Britain and American are together seeking to exploit loopholes in existing international arms convention, our credibility will be severely undermined. Suggestions that we use such weapons as part of any sanctions programme is a level of policy which must be discussed on the House of Commons.'

British personnel at the secret meeting with the US military included Vice Admiral Sir Jeremy Blackham and Dr Martin Hubbard, who heads the non-lethal weapons research programme at Porton Down, Wiltshire. US officers included Major General Bice, deputy commander of the US Marines in Europe, and Brigadier-General Richard Zilmer, deputy director of US operations at European Command Headquarters.

The documents reveal the full scope of the new weapons programmes that the US military is developing. The first was high-power microwave technology that cooks an enemy's skin. Its military name is the Vehicle-Mounted Active Denial System (V-Mads), but it has already been nicknamed the People Zapper. It works by harnessing electromagnetic power to fire an invisible pulse of energy at light speed towards a target. The beam causes the water molecules under the skin to vibrate violently, producing heat and discomfort. Scientists believe the system could heat a person's skin to about 130 degrees in two seconds.

The US delegation admits there might be problems with legal claims by victims.

The documents reveal that both the British and US military believe laser beams have a 'number of potential applications and desirable attributes as a non-lethal weapon'. They are impressed that laser guns can be 'tunable' either to stun or kill. Although laser weapons that permanently blind are banned under international law, the documents show officials are studying low- energy lasers that blind temporarily and others that produce a stunning effect.

The classified document, which is an 'assessment report' of a meeting that took place on 30 November 2000, admits the term 'non-lethal' was inaccurate.'

THE MELATONIN HYPOTHESIS - AN INTRODUCTION

Prof. Dr. Alexander Lerchel, International University Bremen School of Engineering and Science, D-28759 Bremen, Germany

This article focuses on the effects of melatonin, a substance secreted by the pineal gland, on physiological functions, its ability to scavenge oxygen-derived radicals, and especially on the involvement of this substance in possible adverse effects of electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields. By using epidemiological methods, it has been frequently reported that those anthropogenic fields may have adverse health effects, whereas the impact of those fields on the general population is still a matter of controversy.

The so-called melatonin hypothesis tries to put these different issues into context. Although this theory is not yet proven, numerous investigations used it as their rationale.

One of the major problems in this context is the still missing, common-ly accepted mechanisms by which weak fields are able to interact with biological systems since the energy transmitted seems to be too low in comparison to the thermal noise. Non-linear mechanisms are therefore discussed as possible alternative explanations.

The energy released by mobile phones is partially (up to 50 %) absorbed by surrounding tissues, especially in the head and the hand of the user. These fields, unlike those from base stations, are able to cause increased tissue temperatures, whereas the absolute values of temperature increase depends largely on the type of tissue, the antenna configuration, and the habits of the user. Meanwhile, mobile phones are available which prevent this temperature increase by special designs.

Based on the aforementioned reasons it is possible that the synthesis of melatonin from the pineal gland, which is located in the brain, is affected by electromagnetic fields originating from mobile phones. Thus, research is needed to investigate this possibility to either prove or refute this hypothesis. The results of these experiments may serve as helpful arguments both for the users and for the mobile phone industry with respect to fears from electromagnetic fields, and safety regulations, respectively.

INTERFERENCE OF THE BLOOD BRAIN BARRIER FUNCTION BY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS
Priv.-Doz. Dr. med Florian Stögbauer
University of Münster/ Germany

To date a number of in vivo investigations on effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on the function of the blood brain barrier (BBB) have been carried out , but they didn't reveal consistent results. The reasons for the lacking reproducibility lies in the nature of the chosen experimental in vivo approaches itself. Here the control of identical experimental boundary conditions cannot be guaranteed for different laboratories. In nearly all fields of biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology this difficulty let scientists dissociate from in vivo models and replace them by adequate in vitro models to investigate certain correlations in more detail. By the use of such in vitro models experiments on basic molecular mechanisms can be done on very good reproducible general conditions, also in different laboratories. The cell culture systems used in this context are established in literature since many years and offer the unique opportunity to get closer to the cellular, biochemical, and molecular biological mechanisms of observed effects and to describe these with more exactness. But primarily these experiments on cell culture systems serve for describing general biological mechanisms. To make estimations on possible health risks, then specifically targeted in vivo experiments have to follow.

Consequently, it seems to be thinkable and probable that investigations with in vitro models on the effects of EMF on the BBB function finally will lead to reproducible and thus commonly accepted results. Moreover, in case of reproducible evidence for a functional loss of the BBB after field exposure to EMF, it will be possible to get closer to the responsible underlying molecular mechanisms. This would be exceptionally interesting for basic research in biology.

It is demonstrated that the BBB is a tried and tested physiological system, suited to investigate the possible effects of EMF on functional systems of the central nerve system.
