Alasdair Philips: How to classify base stations
re height and power - Electromagnetic Pollution-Literature (29/10/02)
Tramès per Klaus Rudolph (Citizens'
Initiative Omega)
Have a look at the www.powerwatch.org.uk
home page plus Norwich and Basingstoke links regarding how to classify
base stations re height and power.
Radiation Exposure Index (REI) should be under 1 (approx). The lower the
better.
Click the PLANNING button to get a description of how to calculate the
REI.
It is only a good rough guide based on what information is readily available
in the UK. It would be better to use total EIRP rather than EIRP/Carrier,
but we can't easily get the number of carriers (typically 2 to 6 over
here), so I chose EIRP/(height^2) as the metric.
It shows some frightening results for low height and hidden antennas.
It is similar to the Body Mass Index (BMI) for 'fatness' of people (kg/ht^2).
It is actually based on fall off of power with the square of distance.
It is crude, but it does give a very quick 'look-see' measure of how grossly
a base station is irradiating the nearby area.
Good wishes
