* New
research commissioned by mep demonstrates real dangers from mobile phone
masts (2/10/02)

In response to the many requests for help from constituents campaigning
against the siting of mobile phone masts in residential areas, Green MEP
Caroline Lucas has commissioned research through the European Commission's
Directorate General for Research into the health effects of these masts.
Authored by an expert in the field, Dr Gerard Hyland, from the Department
of Physics at Warwick University (UK) and the International Institute
of Biophysics in Germany, the study demonstrates that existing Safety
Guidelines are completely inadequate, since they focus only on the thermal
effects of exposure to electro-magnetic fields. Dr Hyland's research
shows that the non-thermal frequency-specific effects are highly significant,
and also need to be urgently addressed.
Caroline Lucas said: "This research demonstrates that there is a
very real problem. I will be using this new evidence in order
to press the case for strong, binding EU EU legislation that will prevent
the siting of masts in densely populated residential areas."
Dr Hyland's research shows that the pulsing of the microwave signals used
in the digital GSM system of mobile telephony contains certain low frequency
patterns that lie in the range of the human brain waves. Given that both
light and microwaves belong to the same electromagnetic spectrum, differing
only in their frequency and degree of coherence, there is no reason to
suppose that the negative effect of a flashing visible light (eg the ability
of a stroboscope, even at quite low intensities, to introduce epileptic
seizures) does not extend to microwave radiation flashing/pulsing at an
equally low frequency, since this can easily penetrate the skull.
That it is unreasonable to suppose that our brains should somehow be immune
to this electromagnetic aggression is pointedly emphasized by the prohibition
on the use of mobile phones in aircraft on the grounds that their signals
might interfere with the plane's control systems. For, given the
infinitely greater electromagnetic sensitivity of the alive human organism,
it would be paradoxical if the same radiation did not similarly interfere
with our own neural processes.
Dr Hyland said: "If the same level of uncertainty and debate as currently
surrounds the safety of human exposure to GSM radiation obtained in the
case of a new drug of foodstuff they would most certainly never be licensed."
Dr Hyland will be presenting his findings to the European Parliament's
Industry, Trade, Research and Energy Committee on 11 July 2001.
