Jaguars
in action - latest update
About
5000 people reported that they had contacted Argentine embassies
or the Argentine government directly to object to the destruction
of Argentine rain forest.
Read
the comments from participants.
Thank you to
everyone who made a phone call. The phone campaign combined with
the paralysing of bulldozers on the spot by our Greenpeace Jaguar
motorcycle team has significantly increased pressure on the Argentine
government. We'll keep you informed as this campaign progresses.

Protect Deep Sea Life
Far
below the ocean waves lies a dark world rich with life. From depths
of 200 metres down to 2000 metres and beyond, the deep sea is home
to the largest pool of undiscovered life on earth.
Biologists estimate that somewhere between 500,000 and 100,000,000
marine species have yet to be discovered - and it is under threat.
As traditional
fishing grounds have become increasingly depleted trawlers are going
further afield and fishing deeper than ever before.
Greenpeace New
Zealand has created a beautiful deep sea e-card that you can send
to your friends and colleagues - it may take a while to load but
it is worth the wait!

| Rainbow
Warrior: Pacific Fisheries in crisis
Greenpeace
conservatively estimates the costs of pirate fishing in lost earnings
to Pacific Island States is between US$134 million and US$400 million
per year - much more than all Pacific Island States earn in fisheries
access and licenses fees.
Pirate fishing is a major threat to Pacific fisheries and our marine
environment.
The Rainbow
Warrior crew has posted an online petition which you can sign. This
petition will be delivered to delegates at the first meeting of
the Western and Central Pacific Commission in December. It supports
those delegates who are willing to put sustainability first.

| Protect
the North Sea
Our
ship the MV Esperanza is out defending the North Sea – documenting
the devastating threats to the marine environment.
Overfishing has caused fish stocks to collapse while other activities
such as oil, sand and gravel extraction have also taken their toll.
We’re
calling for 40 percent of the North and Baltic Seas to be turned into large-scale
marine reserves – essentially national parks but at sea.
Please take
urgent action now – demand marine reserves by signing our
petition to the incoming President of the European Commission and
sending an e-letter to UK Environment Minister Elliot Morley.

| GE
labelling in North America?
The
Canadian province of Quebec is considering the mandatory labelling
of food products with genetically engineered ingredients.
If this is implemented, it will be the first such requirement in
North America. Please write to Quebec Premier Jean Charest and ask
him to support such labelling.

Finnish
Government breaks promise!
In
the north east of Finland, the government's own logging company
has been clearcutting old forest in breach of a moratorium agreed
with environmental organisations.
Greenpeace and the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (FANC),
in a field trip to the area in May, discovered that Metsähallitus
– the Finnish government's logging company - had clearcut
in three areas of old-growth forest in the previous six months.
Cuts ranged in length to over a kilometre.
Metsähallitus plans
to continue logging in grazing areas, seriously threatening the
livelihoods of many nomadic herders.
