Weyerhaeuser sent packing in Pemberton

Last month, more than 1,500 RAN members and activists sent letters to Weyerhaeuser, the number one destroyer of old growth forests in North America, demanding that it cancel plans to log a scenic watershed in the village of Pemberton, British Columbia, Canada. Today, we're happy to report that your efforts were successful. Last week, Weyerhaeuser officially withdrew its logging proposal and has left the scenic mountainside above Pemberton intact.

Pemberton Mayor Elinor Warner extended a personal thanks to RAN supporters. "We are very appreciative of anybody who sent letters of support, thanks to all those who helped us achieve these positive results."

In a comment to the Whistler Question, a local newspaper, Town Councilman Mark Blendel said "It's just great for our community and it just goes to show that it pays to be a little, vocal community that works hard on an issue that touches everyone."

While RAN is pleased to have helped the people of Pemberton to protect their forests, our work is far from done. Literally hundreds of communities throughout the world are adversely impacted by Weyerhaeuser's destructive and outdated forestry practices. Until the logging giant adopts a global policy to protect endangered and old growth forests, it will continue to invite controversy just as it did in Pemberton.

Protect Russia's Sakhalin Island!
Say "No" to toxic oil spills and to Credit Suisse First Boston

On September 8 a ship ran aground on the shores of Sakhalin in the Russian far east. The ship was operating dredging equipment for an offshore oil project, and spilled thousands of gallons of oil into the water, polluting the beaches of the coastal community of Kholmsk. Experts have warned that a similar or worse accident could occur in other pristine Sakhalin waters that are home to the world's last population of 100 Western Gray Whales.

Astonishingly, Credit Suisse First Boston is serving as financial advisor to the Shell Oil project in Sakhalin even though it violates the terms of the Equator Principles, which the company signed many months ago.

"Shell has refused to adopt necessary oil spill prevention measures that would keep spills like this from happening," said David Gordon, Executive Director of Pacific Environment, a California-based environmental organization that is monitoring Sakhalin offshore oil development. "Now that the oil is in the water, it's too late to clean it up. The damage has been done. It is a tragedy for Sakhalin Island and especially for the people of Kholmsk."
