Rice For Life

rice for life At the end of last year, the United Nations (UN) designated 2004 as 'The International Year of Rice'. However it seems that the UN's Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has forgotten to protect Rice from the 'GE Giants'. Access to rice is access to life, and so the sustainability of rice production is tied to equity and rights, which in turn is linked to environmental protection and ecological diversity.

In the run up to World Food Day on October 16, let's call on the FAO to get back to the real agenda of 'Rice for Life', and get governments to actively promote ecological and cultural diversity as well as socially and ecologically sustainable rice production.

Take action now and tell the FAO what you think about GE rice.

Send an e-card to your friends letting them know about the risks of GE rice.

Hey Kofi, save this squid!

squid Ancient worlds are being destroyed deep below the ocean before we even explore them - and the UN has a chance to stop it.

Amazing creatures like our friend the squid here are being wiped out. We are asking the United Nations General Assembly to ensure there is a moratorium on bottom trawling, the most destructive form of deep sea fishing, before it's too late.

Help Preserve Forests in Tasmania

Tasmania ForestTasmanian old growth forests are threatened by logging companies producing woodchips to export to Japanese paper markets.

Nippon Paper co., Oji Paper co., and Mitsubishi Paper Mills co. are major buyers of the ancient forests destruction in Tasmania.

Please send your message to these Japanese paper companies and ask them not to buy woodchips sourced from old growth forests in Tasmania.

Electric Car Victory

Th!nk carsAfter a short campaign Ford Motor Company agreed to reverse a plan to destroy more than 400 electric cars and instead will ship them to Norway where eager drivers are waiting to buy them.

More details emerged at a Ford news conference today in Oslo, Norway.

Ford announced today that they would ship the surviving Th!nk cars (300 out of a total of 480) to Norway, with the first shipment arriving this November. Unfortunately 180 of the original 480 cars had already been destroyed before Ford was forced to stop after a pressure campaign organised by Greenpeace and Rainforest Action Network.

Thank you to the more than 500 people who wrote to Ford to support this campaign.

Volunteer for Greenpeace!

GreenpeaceWe're looking for volunteers to help us with usability testing and general feedback on our new next-generation website.

As a volunteer, you'll be asked to review prototypes, participate in short phone interviews and possibly a focus group. It will probably take 4 to 8 hours of your time over the next few months, and we'll be happy to send you a Greenpeace t-shirt as a token of our thanks.

It doesn't matter about your level of experience with the Internet - we're looking for both experienced and inexperienced users. To volunteer, send an email to: greenpeace@activism.greenpeace.org, with the subject line "Volunteer", and tell us your name, email address, phone number (including country code), postal address, and how long you've been using the Web.
